Pre-2000 anime thread. What are you watching, /a/?

I decided to start some obscure /m/ show called Plawres. The synopsis makes it sound like Custom Robo, which I'm all for.

Finally! Been waiting for this thread for ages!

Working on Initial D lately, saw Third Stage, the movie, last night. I think the best so far was the first season, I liked the romance and really exciting races. By the end of season 2 it was starting to piss me off how they constanty reset all romantic development, it was cool and artistic in season 1 but in season 2 I had enough. Glad they fixed one of the relationships in the movie.
I also want more of the girls, especially the girl, they were some of my favourites, but seems they were only a one off thing.

I also saw the first two episodes of The Mysterious Cities of Gold last week. It seems pretty good so far, could be interesting to watch. I didn't really plan to watch any 80s TV anime yet, I thought it was French so it was okay, but oh well. Will probably finish it eventually, but will take some time. May use it as my streaming anime, that I only watch when I only have streaming avaible.

Besides those two, I haven't seen that much anime lately, and especially not old anime- oh right, I saw an episode of Turn A Gundam yesterday. Would be nice to finish it, but I'm being slow.

Still only thinking about finishing Rose of Versailles, and also been more tempted to pick up Akage no Anne lately.

And kinda saw a few episodes of Lain, but not as a part of actually rewatching it. Real masterpiece.

>>
I'm wondering if City Hunter gets better in the second season. First was fun, but kind of got repetitive and the budget wasn't enough to totally compensate. But the OP to 2 looks so amazing it makes me want to commit to finishing the franchise.

Finished Noir. It's 2001, but rooted enough in the late 90s style and production methods to count all the same. Why did this show need to be so good looking, shot on 35mm, and anamorphic 16:9? It was one of the slowest and dullest things I've watched.

Doing Rune Soldier Louie now. It's fun but I can see it getting tiring, but would benefit from gratuitous nudity, especially for the brown muscle chick. Also Kikuko Inoue as some kind of nun.

I can recommend the movies even if you've seen the series. The first two aren't too different from the series, just condensed and with some of the more egregious stock footage loops taken out, but the third movie is absolutely amazing and I'd say superior to the final arc of the show. I'm 30 episodes in CCS, it's pretty good but I wish it was a bit more than episodic adventures. Aside from new characters getting introduced and the past of Sakuramom getting revealed slowly, fucking nothing is happening past the confrontation with the monster of week.

>>155887685

It's cliche because everything else followed it, and it's just based off a D&D campaign. Thank god for them also fucking up on the dark elves and not actually making them black/grey.
>>
>>155887880
How was the romance in this? Cringy?
>>
>>155887880

Some people find it incredibly boring, some people love it. Comes down to how much you enjoy Takahashi's style, same with BP and Tomino and Cyberteam and the wave of kitschy late 90's hyperdeformity and bombastic sexualization that rolled into early net culture in japan
>>
>>155887970
It takes place in a timeskip from the last episode, but it's not really important since the TV version has the "true" ending, while the movie starts to put noise there with the sudden appearance of Nikaidou (manga only), retcons some scenes like one with Mitaka and reintroduces the pupeteers which were retconned out of existence from the TV series pretty fast. In conclusion take the movie as a bonus, not really as an important piece in the timeline.

Years ago I scanned and uploaded the Into the Sky artbook by Haruhiko Mikimoto. He did the character designs for 0080 and all sorts of other stuff. I don't think it's been really circulated around. Here's a link if you guys want to have it.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/7sadhflvnyv3qub/Into+The+Sky.zip
It has art from 0079 to Wing

I'm always looking for new artbook scans, thank you for this.
>>
I'm either starting

Ancient Book of Ys and Weathering Continent spring to mind as ones that play it straight in adhering to that sense of storytelling. Most fantasy anime tend to mix in far too much comedy, or they're isekai.

Yes actually. I had a break for a few months around episode 17 before I could finish it. It just got so tense, when the bad guy had all the objects and that girl was in danger I think and the end of the world was close and they absolutely needed that plan to work. The TV version was much better at building up and making me care than the OVA. The OVA just felt like generic things happening, the TV series actually built up much better and managed to make me care.

Nice, I was starting to think CCS is overrated, as for now it's good but not masterpiece territory.

>>155888467
>I'm guessing you got h-b's encode
I got the only batch available on Nyaa, it's raw and marked as TV version but I wouldn't be surprised if it's what h-b used as I couldn't find any other version. I'd like to import the DVD box to have it in better quality someday, but it's not a priority.
Glad to know the sound gets better, I have sensitive ears and sometimes it was hard to watch for this reason.
Junichi Satou is my favorite director so I'm trying to watch everything he's done, I still have a long way to go though. I think he directed Maple Town Monogatari before Kingyo Chuuihou, but I'm worried this one isn't worth watching by an adult. I will still give it a try.
>>
>>155889230
To be honest "masterpiece" may be slightly too strong, but it feels better than simply "good". I remembered how it influenced how I acted for a while after I finished it, and how much I thought about it for a week or so, which was the deciding factor. It's not as good as Kare Kano, but very good still.

Only Gundam art book I have is MS Era Popular Edition but holy shit is it great. It was done by the 0080 and 0083 teams as a concept thing involving photographs of the One Year War. IIRC all or most of the images from the 0080 ED come from that book.

Same. I dropped it right after the episode with the kitten because I'm a sensitive little bitch. I'll go back and finish it at some point but I'll skip that episode for the rest of eternity.

Thats the only thing that makes me hesitant about jumping into older anime. They were a bit more liberal with the random animal torture/death and its hard to tell which series will have that so I can properly prepare myself. It always comes out of nowhere too, which I understand is the point. Its supposed to be shocking but goddamn.

The Hakkenden is one of those bizarre artist-driven anime that are kind of hard to recommend unless you going for specifics. It's not because it's a period drama, but more because the direction and animation vary in basically every episode. Sakugafags talk it up.

I finished SDF Macross and DYRL a couple of weeks ago.
I was expecting some robot wars on space and some romance elements; turns out it's a love triangle in space with a war against some alien race (that lacks emotional maturity) as background.
It was pretty entertaining but sometimes i felt like the love triangle was taking too much focus, also the last 10 episodes were a drag.

Macross in general is a let down if you go into it wanting a space opera

The story about the Protoculture and the conflict between and Zentradi and humanity was ever present - it is just that the main characters were more interested in their own love triangle for the most part. This is pretty common in the franchise.

I find that the Macross Plus OVA does a good job keeping the action in the forefront for the most part. The conflict is even more integrated into the main characters triangle drama though - oddly enough. It is 4 episodes and looks gorgeous, so it is worth giving a try.

>>
>>155900793
It's basically just a retelling of 0079 - CCA and I remember even at the time the plot being a little confusing because that causes it to move simultaneously way too fast and having long periods where it feels like nothing's happening. Also has that super dramatic and slightly pseudo-pretentious tinge to the whole show that tends to be in every fujoshit show (especially '90s fujoshit shows). Also multiple recap episodes and Relena is fucking garbage. The entire "Trowa with amnesia" plot which seems to exist for nothing more than fujobait material. Wufei in general seems overly pointless and I can't remember what, if anything, he really contributes to the show outside of being an asshole and killing the best character in the series.

There's some positives to show: I remember really liking Noin, Treize and Dorothy. The MS design is top tier and is probably the last Gundam series with consistently great designs: the main Gundams, Tallgeese, Leo, etc. are all great. Everything gets more and more mixed until SEED where it goes to hell with shine, panel lines and random angles all over the place.

>>
>>155907822
I tend not to have a problem with it too much but when a romance is bad it can almost singlehandedly destroy an entire series i.e. Nina Purpleton being quite possibly the worst major character in the entire franchise until either Kira/Lacus from SEED or Kio from AGE.

The deal with Reccoa is that she betrayed everyone in the AUEG because she was lonely and helped the Titans gas a fucking colony.

It'd be one thing if she left because she was tired, or afraid, but no, she goes right back in to the battlefield, this time inspired by "a purpose"

Her deal is just like what Emma said. "Nobody is going to care when you die", and no one really did when it happened.
It probably didn't help that anyone who could care was also in the middle of dying.

Reccoa's a completely broken person. She was a guerrilla fighter as a child in the OYW and had been a soldier all her life when all she wanted was to be treated like and loved as a woman. Then the person who took her heart didn't give a fuck and that was really the end. She was nothing but a soldier, a tool to be used by others with no agency of her own hence why she was begging the AEUG to come and stop her from gassing the colony: she's just a tool, she doesn't have the power to do anything herself.

I don't think it makes her a likable or admirable character but it does make her an interesting one.

Anon. Where can I download the whole series? I'm only able to find 6 episodes with subs and no more.

Also, I don't want to watch the movie before ending the series.

I read a blog post that said that this series had good and interesting characters despise being a mecha show with no cult or classic status. Plus, I'm not in the mood for mecha fights and I read that the main robot only appears in some episodes. That's a good thing because I want more sci-fi drama than sci-fi action.

Also, what's your opinon on the series?

Don't bother with Seed-Seed Remastered or Seed Destiny-Seed Destiny Remastered. It's crack cocaine

Watch Seed Stargazer instead. I think it amounts to an hour or something. It's like a little jewel.

The setting it's the obvious Earth vs Space Colonies. People from earth are "naturals" and people from the colonies are the coordinators (people who have been biological engineered since birth and are space supremacists) therefore the distinction to call earthlings naturals.

You may find allusions to a certain events, places or people. Read the Gundam Wiki for that. Don't waste it on Seed tv series.

The whole thing has more passion, content, intensity, drama than most AU Gundam Shows.

It's like The War In The Pocket of AU Gundam.

The onfly flaw? Should have more length. Maybe some other OVAS or a movie.

Yeah I saw stardust memories and really liked it. Same with SDF and DYRL. Haven't seen Layzner tho.

Layzner is amazing but the first half is really repetitive until they actually get off of Mars and back to Earth. Then it becomes great. You've also got Oberstein as the main villain in part two.

Layzner starts hilariously: "In the future of 1997, the Soviet Union..." 12 years in the future is a bit ambitious, and I think most sci-fi these days more or less understands to really put a good buffer on dates.
>>
>>155973590

Besides Venus Wars (which was a good BD made from 16mm, a 35mm would be even more fantastic, but the graininess of that film stock sort of works for that shitfest world), what other BDs have they released?

Most of the ones encoders love are Italian for some reason. I think Lupin was a recent example.

Yeah, thats the same with shows like Eva, Macross, and Bebop. Tho I guess in Macross its more justified since they have alien tech to learn from.

Exactly, Macross gets away with reverse engineering to spur development. Gundam was smart to makeup some random year, but keep it relevant to 1979.

Most are good anime, the only problem is that it's pretty much a list of 90s anime instead of pre-2000 at large.
>>
>>155928154
The anime drags for me at times.

But the charm of its characters keeps me into it. They mainly play with the romance, but other hijinks take place throughout the series.

>>
>>155988935

I see this got the Disney BD treatment.
>>
>>155988832
>>155988935

I'm pretty unknowledgeable when it comes to grain/encodes, but which one is supposed to be better? Personally I feel like the second is less of an eyesore.
>>
>>155988935
Is that warpsharp I see?
>>
>>155989094

The second one smudges the lines because it ran a filter for the grain. The plus side is that it's a lot smaller, but a lot of people prefer the grain.
>>
>>155989165
The second has so many artifacts what the fuck
>>
>>155989184

That too, the hair is pretty noticeable.
>>
>>155989165

It may be sacrilege, but a lot of these 70s and early 80s series would probably be fine to download compressed into 720p. There often just isn't the level of detail like you'd see in OVAs or mecha series. I feel that way about Maison Ikokku, it's a simply animated show done with watercolors.
>>
>>155964093
>all those BD remeasters with just one or two rips

Well, my main issue is, this adulterated encodes that pass for "raw" will give people the wrong impression of how an actual remastering/restoration job was done, case in point, the card captor sakura BDs, because of coalgirls shitty encodes, they gave the impression that the BDs had things like color bleeding, and edge enhancement and literally no grain.

Like literally, nobody had screencaps directly taken from the actual blurays with no alteration, VLC certainly doesn't help.

And dont get me started on the BIG FIASCO that are the Sailormoon Viz BDs.
>>
>>155989310

There's not much you can do with digital anime from 1998-2006. They're produced in 480p, there's no masters to really go back too.

That girl on the left in the orange literally looks like she shit her pants. That show looks like an upscale job instead of like a film remaster.
>>155989347
I need to label more of my BD screenshots so I can post them easier.
>>
>>155989266
Did I make a mistake by downloading the 1080p release of Touch?
>>
>>155989370
Actually if they are willing to put in the extra work most shows probably have backups of the production resources that are higher quality than what was present in the master. Using those resources to cook up a new master is called recompositing, they've done it to a few shows like Ergo Proxy and Gurren Lagann but you usually just get a FORS or Q-Tec upscale.
>>
>>155989598

Is that honestly what it looks like on the BD? If so, that's awful, and 720p would be more than enough.
>>
Someone should make a list of good BD releases.
>>
>>155989598
I just see it's only 720p the file sizes are still 600 MB per episode.
>>
>>155989598
I feel like my DVD rip is better
>>
>>155989467
It's partially the ripper's doing, because the show itself is just an upscale (being digital and all). I just used that as an example of what all that degrained shit looks like to me since I don't have any degrained screencaps.

I'll never understand them. Why do people hate grain again? Because it makes the show look old while degraining makes them look more like a 00s show? The G Gundam raws I saw were like that, degrained to the point they completely lost their texture and almost look digitally painted. At least we code EG and xpearse doing a better job.
>>
>>155989601

Guess it depends. Either way, they're going to get remastered to 720p and upscaled to 1080p, aren't they?
>>
>>155989407

>>
Is someone going to make a new thread?
>>
>>155990011
Depends if the remaster was done the right way or not, the scanning equipment, per example, most japanese companies had dogshit scanning equipment that added adittional fake video grain over the scan and make them look more grainny that the film elements really were, which leads to the guys who make the remaster/restoration to abuse DNR, case in point, the old 2008 Toho HD transfers for all the godzilla movies, the ones from toho of course, not the ones that Sony did in house in the US.

But also depends if the anime was animated on 16mm or 35mm.

Rayearth per example was mastered at 35mm, Minky Momo at 16mm
