The difference I felt in Kemono Friends was that the implicit storyline (post-apocalyptic setting) was so expertly weaved into the explicit storyline (safari adventure with cute girls). I think a lot of mahou shoujo that don't suffer too much of the "let's make pointless episodes of nothingness to reach the 50 episode count" syndrome would count.
But even Princess Tutu has some weak unnecessary episodes and pacing problem. When it comes to not wasting any time, subtle world-building and moving the bigger plot seamlessly while showing episodic adventures, I think Kemono Friends is just the best thing ever.

Kemono Friends is a case of something getting popular because it's good, unlike a lot of other popular things that were mostly lucky to apply the right formula at the right time, such as SAO, IS, YoI, but also Harry Potter and Twilight if you really want yo use western examples.
Kemono Friends was also in a way the right thing at the right time, but I think the audience has been waiting for something similar for a quite a long time. Kemono Friends would probably have been succesful no matter in what year it aired, unless it was at the same time as another hit with a similar audience, like Haruhi or Nadia, in which case it could have been overshadowed.
