There are at least two interviews with this claim. I don't remember the last one (which was last year) but the first one was the current producer during the second interview about 1.0 pre release (I think was the Newtype which had Kaworu and Rei as cover) about Anno's wishes for Evangelion to move on from him and become a "good Gundam". Well definitely see, but so far the timeline is relatively on course with some changes here and there, Kaji's death and Shinji's sync 400 ratio causing him to be absorbed, being two of those things that converge.

My guess is Shinji needs to quickly regain his memory to prevent the same result, can he stop Misato's and Asuka's death? Can he prevent Intrumentality?
