Am I behind the times for never using the catalog? It just feels more natural to me to use the front page because I've used it for almost a decade now.

The catalog is a very handy tool for keeping track of every new thread being made. When used by a majority it brings about a few notable problems, but to you personally the catalog is largely advantageous (it is like tax evasion in that regard). The information is delivered in a more concise manner, well ordered and more easily searched for what you care about.
Whether or not you want to use it is of course up to you. You can operate 4chan perfectly fine while still browsing it the traditional way. You'll miss a few threads, but that's not a disaster.
