I've been thinking lately how that show is like the polar opposite in every way to Haibane Renmei. It's completely nihilistic, "cold" in the way it does its characterization, and almost every character gets fucked over in the end. The MC is treated like an animal to the end. The scale of the conflict is many times larger with the whole fucking world about to end. It's literally the hell to Haibane's limbo.

Haibane is a way more humble, warm, and optimistic show that actually has its characters successfully find meaning in life. The climatic conflict takes place in someone's room. The townspeople and Haibane are all supportive even with their hangups, in contrast to Texhnolyze with everyone being at each others' throats. These shows are like two sides of the same existential coin.

I don't think so, the MC's drive to live isn't portrayed as a good or redeeming quality as it is in virtually every other anime. That drive doesn't get him anywhere in particular, it doesn't let him avoid fate, it just makes him into a puppet for other people's agendas. And mind you "nihilism" doesn't mean "I don't care about anything" - the side characters get fucked over because everyone in that show does.
