I was surprised to learn that Aqua was supposed to be a Goddess, but I otherwise recognized her and Megumin, along with their shticks. When Darkness showed up, I was shocked. I thought she was a character added in the second season because I never heard of her before it started airing.

Megumin is actually aware of the fact that she acts in an exaggerated manner and the reason for that is actually an important aspect of her characterization. The group is sent to the frontlines in a Battle between Demon General Wolbach + army vs Adventures, Kings Army Kazuma & Co (i think either YunYun or Wiz was with them).
Wohlbach keeps teleporting in and out while casting Explosion on Allied castle, weakening their defense. They cant do shit since It happens always at random intervals once per day.
Kazuma just uses Steal on the enemy plan and they copy Wolbach's tactic : they warp in, Megumin casts Explosion on Demon Army, they warp out. Megumin, Kazuma and YunYun/Wiz do that. I think it was YunYun who was with them. Kazuma was there to see where to aim the explosion at and hide their own presence.
Meanwhile, Aqua kept repairing their own castle walls after every explosion done by Wohlbach. And not only did she repair it, she also turned it into an undestructable construction (Explosion has 0 effect on it anymore and Explosion is the strongest attack there is)
Afterwards, Wolbach is getting pissed and walks into their front door, where a Megumin one-shoots her. This is followed by a very romantic scene between Kazuma and Megumin where both fall in love with each other but neither wants to admit it realy, except for Megumin who becomes more aggresive now.

You can tell that Konosuba is nearing the end here.

In the WN, yes. But WN != LN. In the WN, Kazuma is kinda in love with Darkness. In LN, he sees her as only boobs. Also he wants to fuck Aqua in it, which is something he heavly denies in the LN.
Natsume might go down the same road again but i doubt it, since there is no need for the Barrier of The Demon King to be nuked, as its effectivly ded at this point.

And even without volume 10, in Volume 6 she was just your token loli princess who was unaware of the customs of commoners.
