Araragi was a good MC, the problem was the story went on too long. The key events of the monogatari series occur in the prequel Kizumonogatari. It's an odd series in that the main story is kind of like an epilogue, resolving the loose ends from the prequel. As a result, Araragi/KissShot/Hanekawa the three main characters of the series already had a ton of development before the real story even started, and there wasn't much left to do with them. Basically, the monogatari series probably should have been ~5 volumes long. Particularly, with Bake 1/2, Kizu and Neko 1/2. Nothing else needed to be in the story. The rest of the story is basically filler.
