one of them is a toddler who can barely speak, another is a middle schooler. if you think either of them should have found any real "meaning" in their lives, then i think you've been watching some rather unrealistic shows. that's not to say that they don't serve a purpose to the story, because they do.

it's pretty clear that they're doing what they can to just get by because their parents died and left them to fend for themselves, which is why they're always struggling. the grandpa has a shop but as we just saw in this episode (and in others before) they're still pretty broke and have to carefully think about their spending.

they're also another surrogate family for rei. one of rei's conflicts that we've seen so far is that, after being brought into another family, he feels like he ruined it by dividing them over his shogi skills. hina's family is somewhat of a foil for rei's adoptive family. whereas the kids of the other family hated rei and their hatred caused them to fall apart, hina's family is already somewhat broken (both parents are dead) and they are all pretty unconditional with their love toward rei. rei's experience with his past family is why he's so hesitant to get closer to the sisters, but as we've seen, he's growing as a character and is starting to get over his past and embrace his new family.

Maybe Kyouko could have become a pro since female shogi pros play separately from men, but her dad knew that she didn't have the talent to reach the highest levels of shogi and compete as well as men.

It may have something to do with the fact that the IQ distribution for males and females is different. There are fewer females at both tails of the bell curve, so there are more women in the average range and fewer who are exceptionally smart or slow. Second season should be 100% confirmed. It gets good viewership. High enough DVR recording. It's NHK. Disc sales aren't as bad as ppl are making it out considering its a 4 box release at a high price.

The only problem is SHAFT and their schedule. As long as they don't try to work with other series adjacent to 3 gatsu sequels I'll be fine.

Btw the recap episode wasn't a delay it was announced in the BDs prior to the TV series.

The end scene with Hina and Rei was really nicely done.

Feel sorry for Shimada though, I'm guessing he just doesn't win much in general from now on? He's set off all the flags of a character who'll be jobbing to others.
