Realize that even when Black Cat was serialized, Yabuki as far as I am aware of, never took a hiatus.

The only brief break he had was when TLR ended only for TLR Darkness to start and TLR Darkness has always been published regularly.

TLR did not end. Darkness aka Yami Arc's ended but I don't think the story is finished.

We may get a one year timeskip with Rito in his last year of highschool.

Highschool Graduation and Career Plans might put more pressure on Rito to make some big decisions.

He probably has the option to attend some Space University if he wanted.

Assuming we're getting a sequel - some development for Rito. Darkness achieved absolutely nothing in that regard; we are in exactly same spot as at the end of TLR - Rito loves Haruna the most, isn't able to reject Lala and doesn't want harem. I was hoping this installment would end with MC finally accepting the plan, so we could move to harem conquest and spaaaace in the next series.
While new additions to harem and girls confessing were nice, those are essentially pointless unless Rito stops being a king of faggots.

And if we're not getting a sequel, then I feel robbed, deceived and violated, because that's not what I signed up for.

A sequel to this series. TLRD left so many open storylines unresolved, utterly ending it then and there would be completely stupid.
I mean, fucking look at Ken Akamatsu, or a lot of other mangaka that ended their series way too soon and ended up having to "reboot" the series later.

Situations of TLR and TLRD are quite different.

If the ending of TLR was the final chapter of entire series, it would be garbage, yes. However, as the finale of the first part it works just fine. The love triangle was semi-resolved with Rito not being able to choose, which gave birth to the harem plan. The conclusion was "if you can't pick a girl, just marry them both". Of course it wasn't implemented yet, but that was a job of the sequel.

And that's where Darkness fails magnificently. Despite going on and on about harem plan, it achieved absolutely nothing. It doesn't matter if there will be sequel or not, we still are at the starting point of Darkness. Rito's relationships effectively didn't change even a bit. He still isn't going out with Haruna because he can't reject Lala, Lala still is getting nothing because muh Haruna and other girls are still ignored because Rito does neither love them nor even see them as potential lovers.

The ending of Darkness is actually far worse than the ending of TLR, because the first series at least provided some groundwork for the sequel. The next installment absolved the open end of the original manga, however even if we get TLR:Galaxy or whatever, the ending of TLRD will still remain crap - it just will be a shameful shitstain instead of the diarrhea of the decade.

You're going out on a limb there for the TLR ending, but choose to ignore what TLRD managed to do. Bot are roughly on equal terms. First one got Lala to confess. Second one got Haruna to confess, on top of Yami and Momo. "Darkness" always had 2 main heroines, being Yami and Momo. Both of them had a character arc about coming to terms with their feelings (and Yami with her family issues). With Momo and Yami both having confessed, there's no reason to continue with "Darkness". The harem plan as a means for Momo to get at least some love has been put on a hold, as she aims to win now. Last not least, Rito learned that many of the girls he molests on a regular basis are interested in him in earnest, not just as some kind of mixed signal prank.

There's plenty of stuff that a continuation could springboard off from the groundwork laid in TLRD.

Yes, girls got all the focus they needed, however Rito's development is by far much more important. For harem to succeed, not only he has to accept polygamy but also have some feelings for other girls. Right now, even if he were to marry Lala, he has no reason to include anyone but Haruna.

What Darkness is really missing, is Rito's attraction towards other girls. There is no temptation that could make him stray form the path. Scenes like pic related lack some positive reaction from Rito, like "damn, Momo is really cute" or subconsciously going for the kiss only to come to his senses at the last moment, anything that would push Rito towards considering harem a valid option and spark an inner conflict. After entire Drakness we barely managed to avoid harem plan being brutally murdered, and not thanks to something that happened during sequel, but the love that was established in the original series and Haruna yielding to Lala.

Considering how much development Rito needs to obtain the promised harem and how much was really done, Darkness gets failing marks. It doesn't matter if he is confessed by two girls, ten, or one hundred, the key piece here is Rito. If TLRD ended with him realizing he has feelings for yet another girl, that would be something. Right now, we're back to square one.
