It's part of Kurono's character development, in the begining he was all about ass and tits, that's why he was interested on Kishimoto and Lara Croft, he didn't give a damn about who they were beyond ass and tits.

Reika was Kurono's fantasy given form and she liked him, but it wasn't for being
an average teen that was even nicknamed "daylight lantern", she liked the badass leader that saved her and the team countless times, the Kurono who's only impressive in Gantz.

I think the weakest part of the manga were the first couple of missions, so if you can get past them you'll start to get attached to the "official" team members and will want to see what happens to them. The cut things erased the buildup and maihem that the monster meant. In the manga things took a while for everyone to realize that this guy was a real problem and when he started with the lazers it was a really end game moment.

The buildup definitely wouldn't have fit in the whole "standalone movie" format, so I'd say they did the best they could given the situation. The ending did confuse me though. He revived Anzu. The freedom option was a flashback. He was already a participant before and chose to be free, but then died again and went back to Gantz. They didn't tell him they knew him. Kinda a dick move honestly, if they had told him Kurono died and they needed his points to revive him he would have chosen him without doubt.

The buildup would've made up, or almost, for the people who didn't know the manga before seeing the movie.

What a bummer to do a Gantz movie without it being R, at least for me. The whole point is the ultraviolence, gore, and tits. I remember staring at the pages of certain character deaths for so long, just thinking about how insane this shit was. I think with something like Gantz, you would want to go all the way with an adaptation. The CGI was still impressive, even for someone who really hates it. If I could have my perfect adaptation, it would be an R rated live action that attempts to really convey the violence and horror of some of the aliens. Not just blood bags splattering off camera, but the actual organs and intestines in the most gruesome way possible. To show just how crazy it is to stand up against these aliens when your comrades are being mutilated around you and things seem hopeless. It would cost a lot of money but it would look cool as fuck.

I should also add, just in the scene you mentioned the leave out his dangling spinal cord. Theres no dripping blood. These arent huge issues, but the sum of it was just a dissapointment. I still enjoyed the movie and its probably the best adaptation were ever going to get, but even things like Oka's death were just so PG13. I think his broken spinal cord protruding from the severed torso is a small thing, but why censor that? Things like that just make me wish it was done properly across like 3 movies with an R rating or something.

They used probably the best arc in the series and missed out on the best characters and their actions.

I enjoyed it thoroughly but I was totally wanting Muscle Rider to save the day. Especially since the mission order was WAY after the point he showed up and got recruited.

Still good and there wasn't really anything bad for secondaries to hate BUT making the Tokyo team into giant quivering pussies because Kei died? Pretty sure that's not how it went.
