Not only was it the first Gundam show to be widely aired in North America, it was one of the first "mature" anime of any kind to be shown here without heavy editing, and that means that for a lot of late 20s-early 30s fans it was the show that got them into anime.

It seems crazy to think about it now, but for a lot of us it was the first time we'd seen somebody die in a "cartoon," the first time we'd heard an opening song in Japanese, etc.
