>>

Grand Blue is popular, so I'm not sure what the fuck your point is. If I remade threads constantly about everything other people like that I don't, it would fill the entire board.
>>
You just explained it. Whereas battle harems allow the chuuni audience to imagine they're all special snowflakes who just haven't been 'realized' by those around them, those isekai allow them to imagine a change to more convenient surroundings will make their lives better.
>>
>>153790405
Imagine if you were a complete loser who had no personal attachments or skills or motivation to improve, and you waste all your time playing video games. (I know this is a stretch for all of us, but bear with me.) Now imagine you were transported to a world where your previously useless video game skills were rewarded because this new world runs on video game logic, which means you already know everything you need to know, and you never have to work for anything or step outside your comfort zone ever again!

That's why people like isekai!
>>
>>153790405

That's the point. You don't understand how much Japan loves doing (or watching) the exact same thing over and over, hundreds of times. They're culturally obsessed with the familiar and the formulaic.

What do you want mate. Literally every thing in anime has been done. Magic school Index-clone harem? Battle shit with hot-blooded characters? Edgy grimdark where stupid people die in a bloody mess? SoL yuri garbage? Magical girls?

The recent popular isekai works all diverted from the tropes you've complained about. Re:Zero, Konosuba, and Drifters all stand apart from your complaints. On the other hand the isekai shows that do have your complaints get flaked or receive mixed reactions.

There are no new exciting genres in anime. Everything you watch caters to some sort of desire. The only difference is how well-done the show is.
>>
>>153792567
Flawless.
>>
>>153792722
It just all seems far too convenient if you ask me, even if your fighting style is unusal you shouldn't be able to solo the boss of a dungeon that needs a full party to beat.

>>
>>153793147
The one about the little girl that tries to hide the fact that she's skilled at magic or Mushoku Tensei? Tensei would be pretty enjoyable if the Isekai aspect was dropped, I'd rather read about a child prodigy than a reincarnated NEET.
>>
>>153793248
I only read it because the characters aren't saving the world and the MC is mildly entertaining though his oh-so-cold demeanor gets old pretty quickly.
>>

But why can't a moderately functional human being get trucked once in a while?
An interesting take would also be a NEET getting reborn and staying a NEET instead of a world saving scientist-philospoher Adonis.
>>
>>153793441
>>153793289
MT literally set the template for child reincarnation isekai though and the previous life aspect actually matters there to develop the MC. Like how he realises after Pauls death what a shit person he was in his previous life and how he didn't take care of his family. Also how he tried to even send a letter to them instead of being hell bent on not trying to think about his previous world. Its all very basic stuff but there is development which I really liked about the seriesExcept oldeus bullshit
>>

The trucks are nice guys and know that billionaire Olympic astronaut Anonis has enough happiness in this world and wouldn't appreciate the gentle trucking. Or they just happen to have a fetish for NEETs.
>>
>>153790405
because all anime is generic
>>
>>153793618

I kind of like using NEETs because it's nice to see NEETs play the hero, but also when you use people with ties to this world they keep wanting to go home. While NEET MCs tend to throw themselves wholeheartedly into the adventure and never look back, which I have a certain appreciation for.

Then again, my favorite isekai anime didn't use them.
>>
>>153793675
>after Pauls death

Either I don't remember that character or didn't get that far.

Either way, from what I remember, the MC's past had minimal effect on his action, other than to recall how much of a piece of shit he was.

Also, does the whole "we're in a video game, Jesus Christ how horrifying" trope counts as isekai?
>>
>>153793618
>But why can't a moderately functional human being get trucked once in a while?
And why are you guys cherrypicking so much? Aren't there tons of those as well? Overlord, Youjo, Saint Salaryman, Black Maria, Faraway Paladin, White Kingdom, Jinrou e no Tensei, Seiun wo kakeru and much more. It feels like most of the complaining in this thread is for the sake of it.

Jokes aside, I think this is true for A LOT of people, successful ones and shut-ins alike, whether they are aware of it or not.
All those jokes about the zombie apocalypse and how cool it would be if it happened, or equivalent scenarios, just show how many people wish the world would burn and be reshaped according to their desires.
Some anime genres, like isekai, are considered pure escapism, but pretty much every fictional story can be used to escape reality.

The nice thing about MuvLuv is that the world doesn't revolve around the MC, and when he thinks he can just have fun and escape back home when things get too rough reality slaps him in the face and tells him to take responsibility

Too many isekai stories have the MC basically be on vacation, and there is no tension because when the MC is around he is so overpowered (*teleports behind you* *unsheathes katana*) that nothing bad will happen, and everyone who isn't the MC is a passive puppet who cannot move the plot forward without MC to do everything.

The variety is larger. At least compared to its predecessor academy/urban harems. Most of the specified series in this thread are far from generic. People who don't read narou WNs in the first place have no idea what might be generic when you consider WNs.

Generic would be something like Slave Harem. Re:Monster as an example reads like a diary but you can't call it generic. It basically gave birth to a lot of monster reincarnation titles like kumo and made them incredibly popular.

Daraku no Ou, Oroboros Records, Vermillion , MT, Youjo, Shieldbro, Kenkyou Kenjitsu, Katahane no Riku and many more offer something you can't find in manga and anime. They are popular precisely because they're different from the usual tropes in manga and anime medium.

But anyway most of the people complaining about "generic" isekai here won't go anywhere near WNs in the first place and it shows.

at least only the slightly decent stuff gets translated
>>
>>153811805
>It really isn't
Except it is, when you have 456,770 entries on that website even if 95% of them are trash there are bound pop up lots of unique ones. Sure many of the 456,700 don't see the daylight and some of them are not even proper series but the number is ovewhelming and the variety is huge.

You have the classic senki types that focus on war/tactics battles, the managment ones that focus on crafting or Kingdom building/dungeon managemnt, Classic adventure ones like vermillion and saihate, unique ones like daraku no ou, monster reincarnation ones like Jinrou which is completely different compared to stuff like Goblin kingdom and Re:Monster and focuses more on the social side of things, classic class transportation, Otome reincranations which again different from the above but created their own tropes and so on.

If it wasn't for variety nobody would bother with them honestly.
>>
>>153811805
So what you're saying is if you had something which was an all-star collection of brilliant and original works, and I came along and added hundreds of thousands of nearly identical pieces of garbage, that would retroactively remove all value from the first set.
>>
>>153812045
The problem with the "unique" ones is that they have one gimmick that they hook you with at the start built on a foundation of poor writing and paper thin plot, then after a couple of volumes they have no idea how to proceed since they've milked the gimmick dry and the direction is all gone, the generic part is all that's left.

And each time a "unique" one gets successful, it immediately creates a new template for everyone to spam hundreds of near exact clones of, and the variety is lost.

I think the real problem is the insistence on using videogame tropes. Because of how new videogames are relatively, and how arbitrary the rules are compared to reality, they make it seem all the more artificial.

Whereas urban fantasy and magic battleharems at least can create their own rules for how their specific brand of the supernatural works - Fate/stay night is dissimilar from Shakugan no Shana which is dissimilar from Zero no Tsukaima which is dissimilar from Strike the Blood which is dissimilar from Asterisk which is dissimilar from Nurarihyon which is dissimilar from Antimagic Academy which is dissimilar from Color Wars.

However Re Monster, Kumo, Death March, Overlord, Slave Harem, Arifureta, are all founded on Skills and Levels.

If you are a teenager or manchild writer do you think you have experience in the real world to write a compelling story with organic power politics or relatable characters?

Its used to simplify the narrative structure and world building so lazy writers can churn out made to order trope fests. I realized that if what I had written was a LN or a manga it would be classified as torture porn shit. It involves a guy realizing he doesn't know any language that exists in that world and becoming an illiterate beggar for six months while he learns the local tongue. During that time he gets his foot crushed while working help make pins in a primitive factory line style for a guy who took enough pity on him to exchange food and a place to sleep in a loft for him working ten hours a day. Then he can't even work and is barely able to speak the language, becomes ill and malnourished, and nearly dies before getting taken in as a pity case for a local church. Shit gets worse though.

Also that is exactly where you and either guy are wrong, they are not built on them like many of the academy battle harems with the same old same old developments and exactly the same character archetypes with mc being this dumb nice guy like ichika or that asterisk guy.

The only thing most isekai have in common is transportation and reincarnation that sometimes doesn't even matter. They create their own worlds and their own rules. Sure like you mentioned there are tropes they gave birth to and lots of series use stats. But overall a lot of them are very far from "generic" and take completely different paths like i already pointed out a tons of series that do this.

What about the academy and battle harems? They can only be that battle and harems thats all they are and no amount of academy and highschool in a different skin in going to change that.

That is objectively wrong. What the majority have in common is JRPG world mechanics, and ORE TUEEEEEEEEEEEEEE heroes. All those you cited are a tiny minority.

>What about the academy and battle harems? They can only be that battle and harems thats all they are and no amount of academy and highschool in a different skin in going to change that.
I personally would argue that JRPG mechanics and Dragon Quest are a bigger constraint than the school setting. The school is one location within a larger world that can be shaped as you wish and your characters are free to leave the school (like in Negima, or Antimagic) whereas the JPRG rules and Dragon Quest tropes affect the whole universe you set your story in and follow you wherever your characters go. And in the case of urban fantasy the school isn't even central.

>Can someone explain why is isekai so popular?
Degenerate weebs are so degenerate that they lost all hope and can't even imagine ever being successful IRL, which greatly diminishes potential of inserting into any contemporary characters.
They also grew up playing shitload of games, RPGs namely, probably reading fantasy but degree of freedom modern 3D games can offer are no longer satisfactory to their growing needs.
A nice /wg/ session with good GM probably meet their standard and 2/3 Isekai novels are based on D&D sessions, but /wg/ requires not being robot for some time, actually go out and talk to other people so this isn't an option either.
What is left is:
>litrpg
Or close to it, because it's a mechanic reader is somewhat familiar with unlike low-fantasy /out/door survival skills he can never fathom.
>isekai
Because if it's the other world - there is a chance for a weeb reader not to be total shit there.
Also allows for litrpg elements like skills and magic because autistic weeb can't just suddenly grow balls and become a potent combatant.
>slaves
Because their loyalty usually guaranteed by some magical means and weebs are under delusion that treating slave girl nicely is all that needed for reciprocity.
You don't need to nampa her, waste effort on impressing her, you buy her and treat her nicely.
What can be easier?

You're just projecting your current state on anyone at any point in time.
Would you argue that up until some point everyone harbor hope to be successful IRL?
When this hope fades or person in question gets a redpill about "being successful" IRL - he turns his attention to alternative settings to self-insert into.
Fantasy, sci-fi and isekai.

>The school is one location within a larger world that can be shaped as you wish
I think shaping up a whole new world is leagues above building up an already established world not to mention schools.

>JRPG mechanics and Dragon Quest
Many isekai don't have this. I don't get this meme. Even the ones that do sometimes use minimum amount of them. Like there may be an adventurer guild somewhere but apart from that it may not have stats or anything of the sort. Nor those jrpg rules or whatever that means really.

The ones that have like see Daraku no Ou and how well it uses the so called stats system. Nothing like JRPG mechanics, nothing like dragon quest. Its used to depict the sin's and the author goes in depth analyzing them partly using the Rpg elements to flesh them out. it focuses solely on characters and their sins.

Yo. Definitely one of the genre-defining series for male protagonists since a lot of isekai around the same time was shoujo like Fushigi Yuugi or Rayearth, and then followed by Escaflowne.
>>
The real problem isn't isekai. it's the ore tsuuueeeeeeeeeeee hero. A isekai that acts as th hero's playground to use cheats in is only the most common way that the hero can be given cheat status. Mahouka is an example of this being done on the magic academy setting. It just so happens that isekai is the genre with which it is most often implemented.

>>153814434
There is always going to be someone to take someone else's place so there isn't a point. Sure, I consider myself an intellectual and there are few that would think like me, but I just can't bullshit people since that would go against my virtues. Something lacking in modern society. You know the same society that lets illegal aliens in, every problem solved with drugs, people depending on welfare instead of themselves, people living longer than they should, political correctness stemming into everything, morality decimated by the weak, and degeneracy being normalized.

So in a way Isekai is a good thing, because maybe it will convince someone enough to kill themselves and be reincarnated into the correct world.

You bring up a fair point regarding to whether they're generic or not, but it seems to me that the longer they go on, the closer their storylines get. That's a problem in anime in general, the power creep makes the longer stories eventually go towards the same two endings which are either insanely strong guy annihilating everything (DM and RE:M) or power of friendship, which is where Gun-Ota seems to be heading.

Well yea, that's the entire point of globalism. (((They))) want to make weaken the world. I think the problem is that it is too late to stop it. So enough you'll have factories making babies and machines doing the work of humans. Rendering even humans obsolute.

As I said, dying and going into a different world isn't really that bad compared to modern society.

That brings me back. I remember watching Gatekeepers, which was the most joyous thing I'd ever seen until the final arc, which was bleak as fuck.

Then there were the novels and the OVAs, which were even worse. The hero breaks up with the girl of his dreams, dies fighting a monster that will come back anyway, and his daughter grows up hating his guts.

Why don't they just create more settings besides medieval fantasy? Tanya is a step in the right direction, but we need more.
