Some individuals can, but generally, those interested in "4chan projects" are often attention seeking assholes who can't actually get any work done.

There have been at least 6-7 sub groups mostly or entirely by /a/non over the years, probably closer to 10+ actually.

/a/ for a time was extremely influential if not practically running the show for the whole sub group scene before crunchyshit and HS homogenized everything. HS made a lot of group efforts utterly redundant. Speedsubs aren't even in newfags' lexicons because they expect HS in a few hours after japan airing. Quite often it used to take a few days waiting for fansubs to come out for airing shows, and these were the speedsubs. Slow (but high quality) took longer.

There are a number of fansubbing groups that have their origins on /a/, but if you're talking about making /a/ itself into one large fansubbing group, you're talking nonsense. First of all, you need additional infrastructure besides just the board and some file sharing services to do a fansub, which someone has to maintain, and all the problems that come with that. Second, trying to get /a/ to collaborate on anything is a task on the level of cat-herding. There's just not enough cohesiveness to make it practical.

Most fansubbers have moved on to other sites or just stick to IRC now a days.
Back in the day you could probably get a few competent anons together and sub a few shows/actually form a group, but now the whole subbing community is just far too hard to get into due to the speed subs provided by crunchy and funi.
Most groups that start out today either get entirely glossed over or are bullied to death by existing groups and translators.

We do, but rarely. It's usually for a one-off project that no 'real' fansub group has done and is being neglected. I took part in an SYD OVA that /a/ released a while back. We formed, did the OVA, and disbanded all in 3 days. Honestly, the main issue is the existence of CR. Their translations are good enough most of the time, though sometimes they dive head-first into 4kids territory.

The rest of the time, there isn't a translator around. They're the most important member of a group, and can get burned out pretty quickly. Everything else can be done by one or two people who know barely any moonspeak and can be replaced, but the translator is critical. There's actually a few shows I'd get back into it for, if I had a translator willing to work on them.

You're missing the point. I'm not talking about legal digital for the sake of it being legal, but due to the fact that the potential quality ceiling of legal digital is way higher than that of illegal digital. Legal digital could completely wipe the floor with fansubs in terms of both quality and speed if they really cared because they get access to much higher quality sources than the second-hand sources that fansubbers have to rely on. Sadly they've mainly fulfilled the speed part of that equation for years with no sight of improving.

But just imagine if all those HorribleSubs rips came with fansub-tier typesetting, and had the OP & ED always translated, and the video didn't have horrendous banding artifacts? All that could be possible, and at that point there'd be basically no reason whatsoever for fansubs to even touch anything that gets a legal digital release anymore. Fansubs aren't the ideal way of doing high quality digital distribution, but they're done even today because the legal options aren't fulfilling that role in a satisfactory way.

And that's why everyone should care about legal digital distribution.

Fansubbers existed before you did, retard. One of the only acceptable uses of a trip has always been for fansubbers to identify themselves. While it's never been too common for groups to form entirely on /a/, most fansub groups have had a majority of their staff be anon, with staff being found through through threads/begging. Same deal with how a lot of manga scans work nowadays.
Of course, it was rare for groups to be formed entirely on /a/ and from anons, but most fansubbers are anon, even if they're not recruited on /a/. I sometimes like to translate manga and post it on /a/, but that's pretty much as far as I go. I've been thinking of learning how to clean and typeset, but that's only for series that I personally enjoy and want others here to enjoy as well.

Working in a group and having to compete in order to push out anime subs seems like a colossal pain, especially if I'm already capable of understanding the show and not having to worry about what you faggots think about it.

Like the characters say things, and then the English lines do not reflect what's being said. At all. That has nothing to do with stylistic choices, it's just wrong. 1) Fansubbing is dead. Like dead dead. It's been irrelevant for a long time for the vast majority of people.

2) It's a hard thankless task, and I have no reason to do it.

Seriously, many fans’ expected standard for anime/manga translation is unlike any professional standard for the translation of any other text. It insists upon an odd anime-fan pidgin language which is more concerned with individual minutiae than accessibility or expression. Many anime fans seem to think that a translator’s job is to make the viewer — versed as he is in honorifics, family terminology, and other “untranslatable” nuance — feel like an expert Japanophile while still translating the large swath of the language that he/she does not know.
