It was the same ending. Maybe it implied more slightly that they're actually still together, as far as I remember he kissed her on the lips not the cheek like in the anime.

Except then they were re-dating again while his relationship with Kirino hadn't been unfucked at all.
I could see it if they showed the two hiding their relationship and doing it in secret or something. But what actually happened was... the plot just ignored the whole reason they broke up in the first place and pretended it never happened?

And this is why we can't have good anime anymore, make a story just a little bit complicated and everyone lose their shit because they can't handle a little bit of subtext or something that doesn't have a linear script. It's like people here can't even understand basic human behavior anymore.

They basically had a fight over it during one of the last interviews. The author intended on the kiss being on the lips but the butthurt nekofag of a director wanted to leave it slightly more ambiguous.

There was not much Fushimi (author) could do since he didn't explicitly specify that he wanted the kiss on the lips. He thought that it was obvious. He instead asked them to make sure Kuroneko's rejection and Kyousuke's proposal to Kirino got adapted perfectly. The nekofag anime staff took advantage of the kiss not being specified and gave us shit.

Fushimi wasn't happy about it. So he ended up countering it with the sole aspect that was still under his control in terms of the anime: The BD Extras/shorts. That is why we got what was basically 2 full episodes of extra content in the last BD. And then there was also the After Story.

It wasn't so much that it couldn't air. They could have fucked and Japan wouldn't give a shit about it. The problem is that oreimo was, at the time, mainstream as fuck. I mean, compared to YnS and such. The publisher couldn't really do that when they have other series with incest possibly happening. With the ending as it is in both LN and Anime, it's still possible for Oreimo to be used as a viable IP for advertisement and such. Just look at the whole voter stuff promotions Kirino/Oreimo did like a year or two ago.

Also, they actually don't even get classified as OVAs in Japan. I remember that being made a point before the three last episodes were released. They specifically didn't want people to think they were OVAs and wanted them to be seen as the last three episodes they didn't have time to animate on schedule/slot to air.
