Back before I used edit for Philanthropy the typesetter had a habit of putting emotes in the subtitles. After I joined I axed that shit pretty quick. The real annoying shit is when characters make jokes that don't make any sense to non-japs. Sometimes the translator would just give me a raw translation that didn't make any sense too.

I almost miss those days. It was hell trying to crank out a release in 12 hours back then but we did it anyway. We weren't the best but we were fast.

No. The role of a translator is convey the original meaning of what is being said. Liberties are taken in order to convey the original intentions so that the audience can understand and not be overran with insane cultural differences. The role of the translator IS NOT to create content or to put what is not said into words. It is to convey what was being said so the audience can read it. If something is being subtly implied, it should be translated so that it is still subtle, not in your face. They shouldn't be making shit up.

CR translations for Gabriel aren't translations, they are rewrites. They aren't translating what the author put down, they are interpreting what was said and making a different work and adding content where there previously wasn't content. Liberal translations are borderline rewrites in the first place, but this isn't liberal, its just plain rewrite.

I'm not anti-TL but given a choice between a reasonably liberal translation without TL vs more direct translation with TL I think the first should generally be preferred. Emphasis on "reasonable" and "generally". The bear pun could have been done with TL as the Spanish subs did. Hella rewrote the joke so it didn't need TL.

In the case of 馬鹿 even with TL the actual joke goes over the head of anyone who doesn't know the Japanese idiom.

The ESL anon also did it well enough: by adapting the TL note into the normal text using brackets, something that is often used by subbers who know that properly translating shiritori into English is impossible. The joke isn't adapted fully and some humor is lost because of that, but at least you know why the joke is there and what was its intention in Japanese.

There is nothing wrong with TL notes, they don't make the subbers appear unprofessional or anything, I just pause the show to read and understand and once I do that scene can be put of my mind and I can be satisfied that I came as close to understanding the original intent of the author as is possible through the subs and things weren't lose in translation.

Worse I would say is an attempt to translate a cultural reference into a percieved western equivalent that just doesn't agree with the original line and the joke or pun is entirely lost in translation (banana snack -> kitchen sink) and the viewer is left wondering what the hell the translator even meant thats adding an extra layer of complexity instead of leaving in a TL note either in the scene itself or at the end of the episode in a collection of TL notes for the viewer to read and understand at their convenience, or a second seperate sub file for translator notes to be toggled on at first viewing and maybe off on the second once the viewer understands the line after reading the TL notes on the first go.

I have no problem with TL notes done either way, they are less jarring or "immersion breaking" than a badly translated line.
