same. I just recently started watching the show, and boy does the first season feel like a complete different show than majority of what follows. The first "recap" episode however nailed it for me.

Personally I think that Sorachi just liked the design too much to completely scrap it. In the anime, they changed female Okita's design just slightly. She didn't have the pieces of hair hanging down the sides framing her face so there was definitely a differentiation there. But it looks like the two designs in the manga are nearly identical which was what finally made me make the connection. I mean, yeah theres some sameface in Gintama but I don't think its THAT bad.

Agreed. Souko was definitely the highlight of that arc for me. She's just really pretty, even compared to the regular female cast and I'm not sure what it was that made her stand out like that.

Also I find it a little funny that someone would shit on Gintama for not being feminist (which is kind of a ridiculous thing to expect in the first place) even though the bottom line of the genderbender arc was that if the roles WERE reversed men would be absolutely useless. The world definitely has a bias for the physical strength of men but if you take that away from them then what do you have? A bunch of floundering idiots that can't accomplish a single task whereas the women, whose strength normally goes unrecognized, stepped up to the task with marked proficiency. They were more successful as men than the real men were and that says a lot.

Sorachi easily could have gone another route and had the women-turned-men be their usual feminine selves to make jokes that way but he didn't. He chose to use the role reversal to show that the women are a lot stronger than they're given credit for and, if they were in a position of power, would easily surpass whatever accomplishments men have eked out.

I feel like there have been little snippets here or there that seem to imply a redemption arc might happen for Kamui, specifically in the Shogun Assassination arc, but at the same time it might not happen. I never thought there would be a point where Gin and Takasugi fight side by side again and while I don't know if it was a REAL redemption (haven't gotten that far yet) it did seem a little forced in the anime. Personally I don't know what I'd like to see from Kamui in the end because he's a bit of an enigma.

And I'm a monster who casually ships Gin x Kagura because I love that kind of father-daughter relationship but I think if any serious pairings happen it'll be Gin x Tsukuyo. Which I'm 100% fine with.

The issue there isn't with Sorachi, it's with general censorship in Japan. You can make jokes with male nudity and underwear even in timeslots for kids (like some episodes of the 3rd season of the Keroro/Sgt.Frog anime), but show a girl in underwear and suddenly the show has sexual content and needs to be at evening at least.

If they attempted to make jokes with the girls as raunchy as the ones that the males get with penises and such, it might get censored even from Jump itself.

I gave this show a try, and after two months I'm finally up to date. I have to say though, I really feel like Gintama truly picked up only after the Umibozu arc.Watching from there, I had a blast with just about every episode that came up until the Kintama arc. But that's about it. After episode 200 I felt like the series was starting to change compared to how it originally was, not just including the art and animation, but even in how the characters acted. I won't lie to say that there was plenty of arcs I did enjoy, but especially with the serious parts like Shogun Assassination/Farwell Shinsengumi it just doesn't feel like the Gintama I know and love. It makes me wish Sorachi never decided to uncover Gintoki's backstory completely, and just left a sense of mystery forever instead of changing the tone of the show.

I think Courtesan of a Nation is on pretty much everyone's list of favorite serious arcs. Overall it was really solid and it introduced best girl so there really wasn't anywhere to go wrong.

I don't know about arcs but as far as individual episodes go, I think my favorite is still the one where Kagura couldn't sleep and Gin tried turning on the radio to help her doze off. I went from legitimately crying because of that story about the dog to laughing my ass off within 0.5 seconds. It was honestly the hardest I've ever laughed at an anime and it'll always have a special place in my heart. Of course I felt weird afterward from the sudden 180 in emotions but that just means it did its job well.

Imagine if a new slice of life comedy started in Shonen Jump that takes place back in the samurai era, with occasional serious arcs like Gintama, however, at the end, aliens arrived at Japan and some huge war started, then it's revealed that the main characters were Gin's parents and they get killed in the war or something and the series ends, only revealing itself as Gintama's prequel in the final chapters. Obviously this is anime so ages are kind of arbitrary to begin with but based on his appearance, I don't think Gin is any younger than 24 at the very yeast. So if the war took place ten years prior then he would've been 14 when he was fighting with Katsura and co. but in the flashbacks he looks much older than that. Honestly I think thats what I want the most out of Gintama's finale. A solid age for Gin so the timeline makes more sense to me.

So those flashbacks of him eating off the corpses was from a battle with the amanto and not just a regular civil war? I guess I'm just confused because all the scenes with them in Shoyo's school they never talk about the amanto once and it seemed relatively peaceful at that time.
