Surprisingly this show is extremely enjoyable despite the simplicity.

Many halves of the show nothing is happening.
2nd op and ed are great.
Manga is very enjoyable although half the authors effort goes into drawing cute girl faces each chapter.

It's pretty good. Gotou is a real menacing guy with such a dominating presence. I haven't read the manga but I hope there's more interactions between Gotou, Rei and his sister. That plotline is by far the most interesting thing in the show. The slice of life bits with the sisters are great too though. Momo is amazingly cute.

There's a chapter later on but he and the sister mostly fade into the background for a while now that the tournament is finished. The later chapter highlights his relationship with the sister a bit more, where it turns out he isn't sleeping with or dating her at all, she is in fact imposing on him, and he sees her more as a bratty daughter. He also visits his comatose wife regularly. Also she's been lying to her and Rei's dad and claiming she's been living with Rei the past couple of months.

He mostly drops off for the time being, actually (aside from the bit >>153198750 mentioned, which is still pretty long ago now), but in exchange the other plot elements ramp up and become more engaging. The sisters develop some drama that ties into Rei's development nicely, and we get more in-depth shogi matches that highlight and flesh out various characters. I think to some extent Umino is preserving the plotline with Gotou and Rei's adoptive family for when we're on the backburner, so that she can use it to help culminate Rei's character arc.

It's interesting to see what kind of baddie female characters or father figures female mangaka come up with.
The "bad" women have more screentime and are always worse human beings than characters men tend to write.
The "bad" men dont have much depth and have very infrequent appearances.
Then again Kiriyama is written to be like some wet dream:
Makes lots of money, is helpful, smart, responsible, looks really alpha when hes working, but has internal struggles his one true love is meant to fix.

Rei is also written as an autistic, gloomy, homely dork with an imaginary fiancee. And he doesn't show much of an alpha side until fairly late in the series.
