Keep in mind now that we have an episodic format they get to pace out things and not put broom race + dungeon crawling + history of magic + shiny chariot preformance + dragon fight all in 20 minutes (this is what the first OVA covered. Not saying it's bad mind you, it's just that they can build up these characters, their stories and their world much better now that they have time to show us all the ideas they had planned and had to cut out).

Seriously, they didn't even do it well with KLK and I'm very happy this show has the pacing and tone it does. It's not moving too fast, characters are actually getting established, it's still fun with crazy antics, it's what I wanted from Gianax/Trigger all along.

As for this episode, I'm pretty happy because I understood most of it, but the one part I don't get is when they are asking why the dragon took the stone, and he says the reason, and they all sound disappointed, and then Akko starts calling him stingy. What did he say the stone was at that point?

I understand what you're saying but I think you're also giving it a little too much credit.
They had to do it this way to cover as much as possible with Akko's story in the OVA (her not being a "real" witch, riding a broom for the first time - all within 2 minutes). In the show they dedicated more than half an episode (x5 amount of time) to show her getting used to the broom and how much she wants to use it, get good as the rest and win the race. She had time to practice and fail, and even after she chained herself to that cursed broom she can't do shit on her own and is STILL being carried around by Lotte or Amanda.

Yeah her character got a little extreme in the show but most characters did (Ursula wasn't as goofy in the OVA, Diana wasn't such a stuck-up and showed her tsun side numerous times, we had no idea about Lotte's inner fangirl, and Sucy didn't really show interest in anything other than mushrooms or potions unlike OVA-Sucy) that's only because we are going to eventually see them change and grow.

No, he doesn't want it for his own benefit. He has a contract with the school where he gives them the stone, and in exchange they give him money every so often as per the contract they have. Nobody can read the contract though, but it's part of Diana's clans lineage to do that shit, so she figures out the dragon had been fucking them the entire time out of stuff, and threatens to collect on their losses if he doesn't return the stone. The only thing I don't get is what the dragon said the stone was exactly, because he said it was only a little of something.
