Why do the Japanese artists have this obsession with power lines and small cities in anime? Just a general question.

They got their minds blown by Evangelion, which used them a lot.

As for why Anno was obsessed with them, I have no clue, but he's a depressed, self-loathing geek, so who really cares?

It's part of their landscape? Why do you think Americans like road-trips that much?

Powerlines are a Japanese invention so it's only natural for them to obsess over something they made

It's the only thing they can see from their rooms.

I never understood the cityscape thing. I know Anno is autistic, so that's why he loves them so much, but everyone else?

There is no obsession. The whole reason these shots were invented was to give context in form of the time of day, weather and audio (cicada noises etc.) and to cut away from another scene as a kind of breather.

The reason power lines and such are used is because you don't have to think about them. They are such ordinary and self explanatory objects that you don't question their existence. I'm not just making this up, for example sometimes you get similar filler shots like this where somethings actually going on, like 2 bugs fighting or whatever, but after seeing that you will actually think about the bugs or why they're finding which destroys the purpose of these shots; which is a breather.

I forgot the name of the guy who basically invented these kind of shots.
>>
>>153069318
He's autistic. He'd rather do Ultraman poses instead of finishing Evangelion.

nope sunset is, because the sun is hitting you directly on the face unless there's stuff blocking it, plus there's also the accumulated heat of the day's sun exposure, early morning can be bright but not as bad since things are still fresh coming out of night's cooling shadow.

Sunset is worst girl with Noon close behind. the Blue Hour Twins are best grills with night time blue having a slight edge.

Love that song, love blue skies like that too.

sorry for 3dpd but i needed it to describe my favorite aesthetic. i used to live in a shithole trailer court but we frequently had rainbows in the sky there during the evening in spring and autumn after it'd rain, it'd sort of look like this. the dark gray clouds would still be overhead and to the east but behind me would be the sun, giving everything a warm glow as it would set, and the rainbow would be in the middle of it. the wind would be blowing softly and the air would be cool. and i'd fly my kite with my friend till the sun sets, staring at the rainbow so longingly. fuck i wish i had a camera because even this lovely picture doesnt do what i saw as a child justice. i think it's even where my sexual attraction to scenery porn started. muh fucking dick.

I live in Montana so not really. Sure when you're driving it can be annoying but that goes for any time of the day. We Montanans know how to appreciate nature and especially sunsets. And nature appreciates us in return by giving us the most beautiful ones nearly every single day. Literally the comfiest shit you will ever experience is a Montana sunset. (Mainly in my town.) Go sit in a field with a blanket wrapped around you and watch as it makes the mountains around you glow.

It makes for a good aestetic choice, honestly.

They're a human construct, they make for good filler shots.
And if you try to be the edgy philosopher they are a good representation of a story.

You have the sky and the infinite universe above, on the background.
While a tiny post, connected with wires, is closer to us.

"Every story is little and insignificant compared to the vastity of the night sky. But because of prospective, even a little lampost can be interesting."

Even if you're not that edgy, It's a way to show the sky and add a touch of blue to the scene.
Blue is calming, comfy and relaxing, a great color to fill and stop a scene.
Gives the watcher a nice breath.

Anime just keeps re-using the same sets over and over because anime is, at its core, a creatively barren and derivitive artform.

No one wants to try anything different. Everyone just wants to ape each other and steal their ideas to seem as deep as them, without attempting to understand why its deep, or why it evokes those emotions.

They think "We will just set this scene in a classroom at twilight. Ring up the Korean painters and tell them to paint a scene like in this other anime and it will be fine"

The anime industry is truly loathsome, and I can't imagine why people still willingly consume the tasteless mush that spills forth from it.

Why do modern stories have this obsession with vehicles in their movies? Just a general question.
>>
>>153078172
Like this guy said in >>153069409, those things you complain about are just part of their aesthetic identity. The scenographic snapshots are the visual analogue of this >https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kigo
adapted and modified by Ozu to better fit immersion in a medium such as film.

It's like scenery descriptions in literature, particularly in opening paragraphs. Lots of critics hate them and complain about their lack of originality while others judge them by their own merit. Why? Because it's just part of the 'meta' or something. Some books are judged solely for them. I, for one, like them quite a bit and when reading, I pay close attention to those details because they tell me of an author's tastes and just how good his craft is at evoking feelings and pictures using only words printed on a piece of white paper.

I'm not saying anime in general is usually original or innovative. There are other elements to judge this, and Ozu shots are certainly not something I'd complain about.
>>
Btw, OP should also wonder why so many painters use tables, jars and fruits as subjects in their paintings.

>>
>>153079604
I like where you're going with this. There is a saying that got thrown around by one of my design profs all the time. "A soft execution of sharp idea is worse than a sharp execution of a soft idea." I think this can be applied to these ambient images used in anime. There are subtleties to how well these ambient imageries are used for their particular shows. Some are excellent, some are forgettable. But they are simply ambience. I think OP might be looking for more, when there might not be more to be had. Ambient imagery only goes so far, it's visual language that most artists can speak. Sometimes, it's not the point of the show that is being made to create new words. Some will certainly try though.

>OP should also wonder why so many painters use tables, jars and fruits as subjects in their paintings.
Because they reflect light in specific ways (especially jars) and are part of still lifes, which are not supposed to have moving objects in their set up. They're essential for learning about the placement of shadows or changing of color in certain circumstances.

The photography class I'm in has a couple rules for pictures and power lines aren't allowed because they're too cliche.

Urban or homely comfy?

Also, I've been to Japan and can confirm, the country exists solely of electricity poles, train stations and rivers.
Not even joking, I always thought they were overused clichés, but there's so damn many of them.

I know it's terrible, but still
It's kinda funny how it's exact opposite of katawa shoujo - stunning backgrounds even for jap commerical vn's standards and absolutely atrocious fanfiction-tier writing with abysmal half-assed character sprites
