Well, it was called Evangelion for girls for a long time.
Starts off like a silly shojo with duels for princess and then goes deeper and deeper into meta and suffering.
The first part (1-13 episodes) is the hardest to get through, many are dropping there. I really got into Utena only by the end of the Black Rose arc and regret nothing.
Also it gives a good introduction on whole Ikuhara's style of storytelling.

I didn't mean "bad", but stuff like the first Gundam or black and white anime from the 60s are hard to recommend to anyone who isn't already a huge anime fan, as they are hardly as enjoyable as recent good stuff because of the technical aspects.
