The attitude he takes with the lieutenant with the blown off hand seems far removed from how the anime portrays him. Yet there's Oberstein whose dialogue is almost 1:1 from the novels.

I got about halfway through and lost interest a couple of episodes after the Yang refused the chance to take out Reinhardt and the war officially ended but they were rebelling. It just felt pointless knowing that Yang could have prevented it. Is the second half better or worse than the first?

Its not that it's a masterwork or anything, just that most other shows are shit at the things LOGH does fairly well.

Reinhardt is great, military/political progression is the main attraction.
The fights are a letdown, an entire plane of battle is being ignored in most engagements and environmental hazards are some 'thing' that isn't really made focus of other than a 'THIS IS IT. DO NOT PASS GO' type explanation

LOGH is one of the few shows that did character deaths right, by following few simple steps.
1) even though they have about hundred named characters, and about 30 of those are mains, they don't turn it into a kill em' all house cleaning. Only few characters die, but that makes their deaths more important and memorable.
2) the deaths are not an over the top gorefest, made for shock factor and aside from few suicides and assassinations, characters go out in a epic and dignified way and their deaths serve the plot.
3) unlike many shows, the characters get development throughout the show, instead of getting character development a few minutes before they die, thus our connection to them is real.
4) the characters don't spend a few episodes crying over someones death. They either respect the fallen or try to hold back their tears, act strong and work harder towards their goals.

What's notable about LoGH is not that it's deep, but that it's broad. It goes a little bit into a lot of subjects, including civics, politics (democratic and autocratic), economics, history, military science (logistics, command, tactics) and psychology.
It doesn't beat a basic textbook at teaching any of these subjects, but it does do an admirable job at showing how you can put all of them together to see how history unfolds, while still being an entertaining work of fiction.

I'm watching the OVA of Legend of the Galactic Heroes and I just got done watching the episode where Yang Wen-Li schools the Rosenritter in chess. I was blown away! I had to watch it a couple times to really pick up on it, but did you guys realize that when he was teaching them about the chess pieces, he was really referring to THEM being the pawns of history! What an amazing metaphor!

It was so deep and meaningful, I am amazed by the deep symbolism of this.

Do the later gaidens continue on with masterful symbolism like this? This was truly the pinnacle of storytelling that I have ever seen on an animu, and I think I can confidently say Legend of the Galactic Heroes is the best show ever made without even having seen the entire series.

Also the Engrish is amazing. The FPA anthem and fourth OP do a great job sounding authentic.
