What's the general consensus on bakemonogatari? Is it essential viewing? More importantly, will I enjoy it?

Some people like it, some people don't. Give it two episodes. If you enjoy that, another 3. Once you finish ep5, you'll have a pretty good idea on the show.
Crab is love, crab is life, though Shinobu seems to be the favorite but she doesn't have a strong presence until nisemonogatari

decent advice. I'll give it a try
Suffers the same fate as all LNs without a deliberate direction: Turns into generic Haremshit and author wish fulfillment. See also: Haruhi, Ben-To, KoreZombie.

How the hell is Monogatari generic?

I like the series as a whole, infact it is one of my favourite anime series, but I didn't really like Bake when I first watched it. I think there are a lot of legitimate reasons to not really care for the show. Bake is a bit more formulaic than the rest of the series. The chronology is all over the place, and the way the characters refer to events that the viewer hasn't seen yet (Like the event of Kizu) doesn't help. At times it being a Japanese series is more of an annoyance than other shows. I could keep going but can't be fucked.

You could try watching it and deciding for yourself.

In about every way not involving shaft's brilliant interpretation. It would have been easy to make this series into a kind of 3X3 eyes Master/servant anime plus harem bits. Shaft decided to remove all the background characters, insert the text of the novel, inter-cut every dialogue scene with unexpected reaction shots and just made something no one had seen before. The story itself is actually nothing out of left field or out of the ordinary.

Why not try out new things and form your own opinions? It's what people had to do before they had internet.

> Shaft decided to remove all the background characters
There are no background characters in the LNs.

It's a novel so it is nothing but a bunch of talking and puns.
