It is said that Anno held the tapes with the episodes until 30 minutes before it was supposed to air just so the censors didn't had time to review the material. That lead to the extra violence on the fights with the 13th and 14th angels. Parents complained to the station but that was ok, there were still many anime series with blood and the like, but when Anno pulled the same shit in the next episode and put an explicit (off screen) sex scene it was enough. Sega retired their money from the budget and TV Tokyo forced Gainax to deliver the tapes with the episodes many days before it was supposed to air so they could review them and the had a chance to change or remove scenes (that's why episodes 21 to 24 have Director's Cuts).

On a side note, because of all this most TV stations started to get more strict with the content of anime and when they saw something that they deemed controversial the anime was sent to a late night slot. This means that in a way Evangelion had some influence in the creation of late night anime blocks

See, my mother asked if there were any good movies I could bring over. I told her I don't have any, so she asked "What about those Asian things you watch? Please, can you bring one? We have nothing right now to show, and I'd love to see something new."

So I asked you guys what's a nice FAMILY ORIENTED movie I could bring for thanksgiving. Keep in mind, I said that there would be children under 10 in the room. After most of the obvious trolls like Bible black, Boku no Pico, Excel Saga, etc I found a few that seemed like actual recommendations. Spirited away, My neighbor Totoro, Kiki's delivery service. I was looking at the summaries of these movies and was thinking "wow, these seem like pretty good ideas. I'll download the dubs for these now."

So I watched Spirited away and thought it was awesome and everything. So I thought everything on the guys list would be okay.

Everything was fine and dandy, family watched spirited away and liked it. Then Kiki's delivery service. They liked that as well.
THEN came Totoro, fucking totoro.

Suddenly everyone started saying it was getting late and they should head home.

My mom whispers in my ear "Um...Next time I'll just go to blockbusters so this doesn't happen okay?"

Now my whole family thinks I'm a pedophile /a/. I mean, I am but I didn't fucking want them to know you faggots.

I just realized this didn't get posted this year, and now I'm sad.

My friend tried watching EoE with his dad when we were 14-15. We were fresh off watching it on TV and huge fans (me in particular). So I bought EoE, watched it, and then I told him about Shinji jacking off and that fucker, he straight up didn't believe me. He was like "no way they'll do it" and I remember feeling offended at him not believing me. I think if it was now I would just throw a fit like "you calling me a liar!?". But anyway, he watched it with his dad and of course, there was that scene. They stopped at Rei groping. That shit must have been dope.
He didn't finish it and I have to just tell him what happened, but of course people back then had very poor understanding of what happened in EoE, so I just told him some bullshit the way I understood it.

I'm still drawn to this anime for some reason, for all the reasons.
Nothing else I watched had such an effect on me.
