I didn't even finish season 1.
The premise looked great. Pretty girl with tomboy attitude walking around blasting foolds with a shotgun.
Except the show suddenly starts following some random dude on his babysitting quest instead.

I think I dropped it around episode 8 or 9.

I agree. The middle episodes were boring. But imo after episode 16, it gets really good.

Nope. It's fine where it ended. The story was written and directed around 23 episodes and any more or less would be bad.
Now that you know who Ergo Proxy is and what the purpose of the proxies was and why the world is the way it is there'd be a huge tonal shift away from the Noir mystery to a sort of battle/warfare story which wouldn't suit the show at all.

I like the open ending. I would prefer a prequel about the Creators and the proxy project.
