Basically the Angels are a life seeding project by aliens. They imbued one type with their physical attributes (the Angels we see) and one with their mental attributes (the children of Lillith, humanity). They did this because any species which had both from the beginning would probably destroy itself before it was sufficiently evolved. Each type of spore was programmed to wipe out the other if it came into contact too early for the same reason.

SEELE deliberately caused the Second Impact if I recall correctly, they needed Adam to be reduce an embryo so she/he/it wouldn't wipe Humanity and life forms as we know then in general. The side-effect was that half of humanity died, but I guess it's better than ALL mankind perishing.

You're right about Unit-01 being born from Lilith (as seen in the flashbacks in the show), but is there any evidence that the others were born from Adam? I think they were Lilith-based too.

Consider this: when 01 tore Zeruel apart and ate its S2 engine, the Seele dudes remarked that she had become god, having gained both the fruit of knowledge and the fruit of life. The fruit of knowledge was from Lilith's side. The S2 engine, which all angels possessed, can be assumed to be the fruit of life (since this is what 01 gained by eating Zeruel).

So if the other Evas are born from Adam, why don't they have the S2 engine? Since they are generally similar in appearance to 01, are humanoid, and lack S2 engines, I think it's far more likely that they are also Lilith-based.

The harpies are kind of a different issue. We don't know exactly how they were produced. Supposedly they were produced at seven different facilities at the same period, which would be difficult with only one Adam around. They also each had an S2 engine, and there weren't enough intact ones left from the angels that were killed before. So presumably SEELE had figured out how to make those, or I'm right and they somehow managed to grow them with the engines directly out of Adam. In other words the MP Evas are a whole other bag, and I don't think that they were made the same way as the regular Evas.

I assumed they changed to the Adam based ones only when they found ways to do it. Lilith based 00, 01 and 02 were all kinda unstable and weak but they had no other choice so until they managed to produce Adam based ones, they had to deal with inferior Evas defeating Angels.

You honestly shouldn't even be bothering with the original airing versions nowadays, the directors cut basically puts in scenes that make End of Eva work and also give more background to Asuka, Kaworu, and Nerv.

This isn't to say the old ones are worthless, its just that the additions make the entire product feel alot more cohesive. They only change 4 episodes but all the changes

The additions to the directors cut clear up alot of backstory, flesh the hell out of characters, and makes one actually work in the story.

You watch it all the way through, with directors cut episodes, then watch End of Eva.

The final scene doesn't really work unless Asuka has her own instrumentality "this is why you're fucked but you can be better" sequence.

People say she doesn't really develop in EoE, which is kinda true, its in the "interests of time" like in the TV ending.

Fact of the matter is she wouldn't have touched his face if she hadn't gone through her own analogous growth in instrumentality. I sound like an Asukafag, which isn't entirely untrue, but I think the point of it, instead of Asuka being an abject failure, is that someone like that needs to fail and get blown the fuck out on that level to begin to really change.

Just because a character mattered a lot for another character within the story doesn't mean the first character mattered a lot for the story. Kaji mattered a lot to Misato but he didn't mattered that much for the story beyond that. Same thing for Yui, she mattered A LOT to Gendo, and behind the scenes lots of plot threads link back to her, but for the story she wasn't that importnt of a character. Asuka as a character certainly mattered way more than those characters. but in EoE the most important thing she did was give us the best fight in the series.

Basically:

Full, complete characters: Shinji, Rei
Well developed but incomplete characters: Misato, Asuka
Supporting cast: Ritsuko, Gendo, Kaji, Toji
Plot device/filler : Kaworu, Kensuke, Hikari etc....
