I doubt they know the secret themselves to be honest. Sometimes everything comes together just right and amazing happens. They've still made some other really moe heart warming anime that I enjoyed though.

I'm almost entirely certain that it was a collaboration of people who no longer work there. In K-On even the background characters have personality and everyone has little backstories that are merely hinted at (like how Mio gets pampered like a little girl at home). Their newer work may look pretty but it lacks substance. You can tell in their new animes that those people who now work there were not around for the K-On years, and don't even remember the basic rule, perhaps never even learned it in the first place (pic related)

You're an idiot and you have no idea what you're talking about. KyoAni has only i proved since K-On. All their works have incredible attention to detail and there's a lot of stuff going on that you can't immediately see unless you pay good attention and understand cinematic techniques. KyoAni are masters of "show, don't tell".
