StrikerS does a lot of things with the characters and the setting that is seen as vastly unpopular.

For one, it's a timeskip. That alone turned a lot of people off of it. It's a timeskip that seemingly bypassed many of the most interesting times in Nanoha's life.

For two, Nanoha isn't even really the star in it. It was the first Nanoha entry in which she was not front and center.

For three, character bloat becomes real. A's kept a tight-knit cast and was able to show why Hayate and her Knights were all caring and loving characters who people should enjoy. StrikerS likes to introduce characters and then never talk or explain why they are there or how they know Nanoha at all. Fate's own adoptive children only got maybe a couple of episodes of screentime.

Finally, StrikerS being 24 episodes just means it's not as concise or well-organized as A's. A's has something important happen every episode, and you can feel it as it happens. StrikerS spends lots of time talking about the setting, and spending time with extremely new characters, but not really a whole lot of time setting up the big plot. Some say the plot really gets rolling by episode 9, some say episode 12. Either ways, that's 9 weeks or 12 weeks people had to wait until they really started to see progress on the show, which immediately killed a lot of people's interest as it was airing. It's also hard to convince people that it's a really strong entry when you have to add "Yeah but it will get really good after nine episodes".

Either ways. A's just has some merits which make it objectively superior to StrikerS. I, personally, don't care either way. I think StrikerS is good because it's the first and maybe only notable entry that talks about the TSAB and the world Nanoha lives in. We could do well for a second entry like it.

I can't say much about that except "I hope Reflection is good".

I watched VS, liked the first episode but then it got weird with magic and stuff so I put it on hold / dropped it and due to recs started watching the main series instead, which turned out to be very enjoyable

Now I just finished StrikerS and I already feel empty inside. Starting to watch Vivid now and then the movies afterwards, maybe next week already.

StrikerS is by far the most flawed, but Nanoha's relationship with Vivio and her efforts to save her are my favorite part of Nanoha.
Also Mach Caliber managed to somehow be an even bigger bro than Bardiche or Raising Heart.

I like the cutesy bits of Innocent, but the characters feel like cardboard cutouts of their better selves. The only things I can remember that were particularly meaningful or interesting were the Fate/Alicia interactions, the team naming, and the more recent team-based duels where they failed once then improved later.

It just doesn't come close to the intensity of any other series. The aesthetic is all about positive values (Friendship, Love, Courage, Hard Work, Wisdom, Tactics, etc) winning out over the negative.

Basically I'm saying Innocent's antagonists are lame. Same problem with Vivid quite often, but there's 10/10 stuff like Vivio and Einhart's duel that finally broke her obsession. Einhart's entire life was on the line.

A's was something else at the time. We are talking about 2005 here, Nanoha S1 had shaky sales and the series had yet to cement its position as one of the leads in the heroine/late night magical girl genre.

A's not only managed to keep the good pacing of S1 (giving things time to develop and once again having the last episode being entirely dedicated to conclusion after the final fight, unlike most heroine shows that like to cram both together.) but it was also very hype and somehow managed to pull the "not evil" rival team well enough.

Maybe nowadays it doesn't shine as brightly, but back in the day it was easy to understand why the sales more than doubled and why Eternal Blaze was everywhere.

There is a scene in the StrikerS manga where Quatro approves the more emotionless and obedient numbers and shit talks the more playful or energetic ones, and Jail tells her that actually it's those very traits that he likes about them. StrikerS had bad designs and pacing issues. Outside of Riot Squad, Midchilda was a generic semi-futuristic world. The buildings, roads, cars were too similar to Earths. The military was the same way.

As far as pacing, I would have introduced Vivio earlier, compressed the squads training time down and had more scenes with the numbers.

The limiter's were also weak. It's too address the power creep that plagues shonen shows, but they should have had a better solution.

Overall, I did enjoy it despite its flaws, but A's was a better show.

That's kind of one of the big points of Nanoha's development Strikers, shown mainly instead through Teana's storyline. This is the mature, fully aware form of the blind, foolish heroism she displayed as a child, and it's no less heroic, indeed it's more so.

Nanoha's key trait is she uses all of her negative emotions as fuel for her will. With Vivio's kidnapping, Strikers dropped her lower than she'd ever been before, down to the depths of despair, but she doesn't (can't) let that stop her. It's beautiful.

If we're lucky, Nanoha will do something particularly unwise in Reflection and get totally wrecked so we can explore this more.

Except it turns out that she was planning to teach Teana a nearly identical close quarters technique and the problem was basically that Teana practiced hard to come up with a glaring problem on her own instead of trusting Nanoha to teach her the same solution herself.

What I keep flashing back to is that moment before the cradle battle. Hayate calls Nanoha up and tells her: "Right Nanoha, I know your device has that blaster system installed, but I'm ordering you as your commanding officer not to use it, it's unfinished and potentially fatal."

And Nanoha acknowledges the order, and hot on Hayate's heels comes a message from Fate, who essentially says: "Nanoha, I know you, which means I know you'll use that system no matter what anyone says. So I'm asking you as your partner and friend, at least don't *over* do it. Please promise me that much, because I can't lose you again."

And Nanoha is all smiles and "Sure Fate-chan, I promise!" and then immediately engages the system, leaves it on the whole battle and carelessly jacks it up several notches to boot whenever faced with an obstacle, doing herself permanent damage in the process.

I mean yeah, desperate measures and all, but it still seems a bit cold that she disregards their concerns like that. Nothing may stop her, but that includes things like her own family and friends.

She's even pulled the same stunt before. The cartridge system, Excell mode; all reckless gambles that ended up panning out okay for her through sheer luck. The blaster system had repercussions, but she really got off light considering. I just feel like one of these days her callous selflessness might have more dire consequences and it'll end in tears.

It's not complicated, watch them in release order. Each Nanoha season that started as an anime has its own companion manga and audio dramas (sound stages). Watch the movies after their respective seasons (movies also have companion manga). Vivid Strike doesn't have a manga.

We tell Vivid and Vivid Strike starters to watch Nanoha anyway so it's still technically apart of the Nanoha universe but not directly connected to her. It's a spin-off.

Grats, Anon and thanks for making the thread. It was one of the best Nanoha threads we've had in awhile. Nanoha does have a nice little cache of dedicated fans who will always be down for a nice 1 or 2 day discussion but as you can see we have trolls just as dedicated to make sure it doesn't happen. If you haven't already, go ahead and dive head first into the mangas and don't hesitate to make another thread about it.

Not the Anon you're replying to but Tsuzuki has commitment issues. He can't stick with a character for more than one or two seasons before switching over to a new MC. Even now Vivio get her 1 and a half seasons and is now being shafted for Einhart and Fuuka. Perhaps he's just afraid of putting any deep thought into character development.
