I feel classic anime doesn't get enough appreciation on this board. Post your favorites pre 1985 and why you love it so much.
I wish we had one, it would be my main board.
I just want to say I would cradle Dezaki's balls in my mouth if he was alive and asked me to.
>Ashita no Joe
>Ace wo Nerae
>Space Adventure Cobra
>Rose of Versailles
My favourites from that era would be all the good proto-Ghibli stuff Miyazaki and Takahata had their hands in. Toei movies, Lupin III, WMT, Conan, Gauche and Nausicaa, and so on. I think that's the best of early anime, never been a Dezaki or Mushi Pro fan.
I was born in 1987, is that not retro
Kei best girl.
What would a date with either of them be like?
I enjoyed it but it is pretty boring. Loved the melancholic and depressing vibe each planet had to offer but Tetsuro falling for the same shit every time they landed somewhere new pissed me off a lot. Still worth watching.
Firefly and Mudgirl a best.
The series is better, but don't Marathon it, 3 episodes a day at most and breaks for days is OK
I'm a bit more forgiving for that sort of thing, it does get a little repetitive but I think that is kind of the point thematically.
I've seen Urusei Yatsura, Galaxy Express 999 movie, and Dirty Pair.
>the movie spoiled the series for manga readers and TV series watches alike
Pretty hilarious, but how did anyone think that was acceptable though?
I can't actually remember the year VOTOMs was released, but fuck it, it's retro enough for me.
Been watching Dougram, it's pretty good so far. Surprised I don't see it mentioned more.
It came out in 1983, so it counts
I know it's not before 1985, but Yu Yu Hakusho is one of my favorite anime ever.
VOTOMS and Cobra are the two main older series I've watched, ultra comfy in their pure pulpishness
I've watched some Green Jacket but need to pick it up again
What should I watch after, based on my liking those three?
If you liked VOTOMS be sure to watch Dougram, which is it's predecessor, and Armor Hunter Mellowlink, which is an excellent spinoff of VOTOMS about Solid Snake.
lupin actually gets quite a bit of love, reference guide a kind anon posted not too long ago
That's because anime older than 2 years has been talked about to death already and you can only recycle the same discussions so many times
This stands true even for anime that aired before the days of 4chan
Miime is too pure and aesthetic for this world.
0079 because it lifted my soul off from gravity.
oh wow that's my post. I fucking love Lupin and we usualy have decent threads.
>tfw the only good devilman dub that exists is the crossover with cyborg 009
we need more devilman animation...and Cyborg 009 No CGI shit though. They fucked over 009 with that trash.
well I had to do it since every damn thread has people always asking where to start.
It has more death per episode than Game of Thrones. It has mystery. It has a protagonist with a clear and attainable goal. It has a love triangle between the protagonist, the strong and independent woman, and the obviously gay mechanic. And the creators were so progressive that they got around the law that prohibited the depiction of black characters in cartoons by giving the Racer family a pet chimp that, by all means and purposes, was the equal to its owners.
yeah no thanks. That shit puts me to sleep. Wish I could understand the appeal of giant robotic mech suits. Just find it incredibly boring. I can see how children may like it but as an adult, the concept is dumb and not that interesting. A lot of people say it's the story of the characters outside of the mechs but then I ask why not watch an anime that has interesting characters and stories with no mechs? Never got an answer.
>Never got an answer.
No, you just didn't like the answer. Seen plenty of people like before and it's always the same old routine.
>can see how children may like it but as an adult
>as an adult
pot, kettle etc
It was weird how at first the show was about how Marie Antoinette had trouble adjusting to her life in Versailles and there were episodes where she was basically the main character, but then in the later half she is basically forgotten until the very last episodes.
Well, I was a kid when I watched this.
To be fair, I can't fully explain why i cherish this series so much. Macross/Robotech was already airing and we had also Mazinger and other mech series going on, but I loved this one above them all.
Princess Rubina was my proto-waifu
Rose of Versailles is my favourite pre '85 show by far. Oscar is one of the most nuanced characters in anime, and I find her genuinely inspiring.
In terms of films, I love Angel's Egg for the visuals and the abstract story telling, but I'd probably rate Night on the Galactic railroad as my favourite movie from that era. I really should read the book one day, but I feel that a Japanese to English translation would probably suck all the life out the original prose.
Yamato. Matsumoto had idea's that Harlock would tie in as a sequel to Yamato, that never materialised, but in the Leijiverse, it makes more sense to watch Yamato as a near future show, and Harlock as a far future show.
I really want to get into some 60's stuff but it's never translated all the way and I refuse to watch dubs.
Is Cyborg 009 finished? Know any finished 60's anime?
Pic related, wish it was complete.
Meh, it aired in 1986, it gets a pass.
I want push Fujiko´s button and lauch my missile inside her.
Was the best, your just too young too appreciate it.
My casual opinion on the few pre 90's anime I've seen.
Solid, but it feels a bit too prototype for me to really love like Ghibli's later works. Manga's amazing though.
Love it. Diebuster sucks.
>Wings of Honneamise
Great animation but this movie's all over the fucking place desu. Also dat casual dismissal of attempted rape.
Franken's Gears is best short. Presence is overrated.
Who doesn't like Lupin?
Need to rewatch.
No love for the wmt series?
I've just finished 3,000 leagues in search of mother and it was amazing.
Made me realize that between the founders of ghibli, Miyazaki might be the most creative, but Takahata is the better director of the two.
I think they're too different stylistically to really compare like that. They equally occupy the highest tier of anime director in my books. Miyazaki actually did the layouts and scene design for all of Takahata's WMT shows, too.
I've been rewatching the ghibli films and so far I think I like Takahata's a lot more, which definitely wasn't the case when I was younger. I think Takahata is better at making believable characters. his stories aren't all that dramatic so he kinda needs the characters to be good to carry his films where as with miyazaki you have so much fantastic stuff going on that the characters kinda take a backseat to the creative imagery.
That series is just perfect. Too bad the author now writes a parallel universe spin-off that reads like a standard Mary Sue fanfiction.
Ie naki ko 77, Les mis and princess sara are the best ones.
>I would cradle Dezaki's balls in my mouth
Same here my nig. Feels good knowing I finally a got a friend to acknowledge there is actually good anime by having him watch takarajima and he's loving it
>tfw i'll probably die before HnG finishes subbing kinnikuman
>>the movie spoiled the series for manga readers and TV series watches alike
Not really. Going to the planet in the Andromeda galaxy where they give away mechanical bodies away for free is set as a goal early in the story, so the fact that Tetsurou and Maetel eventually arrive at that planet is not much of a spoiler. However, what a "mechanical body" actually means and what Tetsurou ends up doing as a result is different in each version.
Spaceship Sagittarius is one of those shows that made me consider taking up fansubbing so that more people could see it. Unfortunately, I don't really have the time or patience. Maybe I'll find closed captions to use as base one day.
Truly the greatest tragedy.
Almost as bad as the fact that I can't actually download episodes from their site for some reason.
Damn, comparing it to the later Cedie is like night and day. Sara was just so well-directed that the drama worked while Cedie's drama just felt forced.
Cedie should've been just pure shota harem SoL.
I grew up on Speed Racer, Star Blazers, Gatchaman and various super robots.
Space Adventure Cobra is objectively the best pre-1985 show I've seen.
You wouldn't survive it.
I watched it as a kid. Shit was awesome.
