Both could work but the former requires a bit of writing skills otherwise they lose both their effectiveness and interest. Most of the time the antagonist's role is to be rekt by the MC and making him a complete unlikable asshat will make the beatdown all the more sweeter.

A circumstantial full-blown sociopath.

As long as the villain is entertaining I don't care, but it's hard to top a completely over the top sociopath in terms of fun.
