I think my favorite part of the latest dumb anime fans being dumb escapades is that people seem to think that if you just tweak the character designs somehow you end up with some sort of awesome amazing first episode and that that's all that's wrong there. That's just sort of the angle I'd expect people to take though.

Of course people are going to keep watching it just to have something to shitpost about and make stupid commentary over cause they apparently literally have no lives and that's kind of what 99% of anime is for at this point anyway. Yeah well being one of the battered waifus of the anime industry and otaku along with Hanazawa, Sawashiro, Uchida, Uesaka etc. who is literally just thrown onto projects now to attract her seiyuu fanboys will eventually drain you of your passion and energy as you become overworked and progressively less and less inspired over time. She's not really getting any good roles in TV anime lately either, they're just throwing her into garbage like this cause nobody really cares beyond just having her somewhere in a show as a main kind of like what's happening to her fembro Saori Hayami here too.

Remember originally she wasn't even cast as this character, it was Hiromi Igarashi. They made a concious decision to change the seiyuu to Aoi Yuuki and the other main from Hisako Kanemoto to Saori Hayami literally so they could get their fanboys and people that subscribe to their whole slash pairing at events to pay more attention to the show. Given the reaction to the look of the show it doesn't seem like it's going to matter though. Last I heard Hayamin fanboys were pissed at the look of the character and shitting on the director and producer of the show on twitter.

Basically typical anime industry, prioritize one thing that it thinks will matter to potential fans and completely neglect a dozen others that actually are more important in the process

The manga and the LN were designed to be realistic. Sure, being in the trenches was ass, and manning a pillbox is certain death, but the anime cut out the camaraderie, the inner thoughts, and instead decided to amp up the depression factor.

It sounds less like NUT wanted to direct an anime and more like they wanted to make a shitty anti-war film, and the end result is this steaming turd they dropped into our hands.
