Fafner is a hidden gem. Because of the hirai faces and the fact it's a long running series people are scared off since it's not possible to jump into the new series without watching all the older stuff.

The thing is that it's a masterpiece and one of the best mecha anime in years. It's worth the hype.

Matsumura worked on 2199 but he wasn't heavily involved in the production hence me not counting him. Season one can be considered atypical anime friendship with a lot of subtext and the most gay thing to happen is this moment. Everything later is anyone's game where their friendship becomes love as Kazuki only scenes of interaction with the cast are with Soushi and to a lesser extent Maya. What's good about s2?

Pacing was off and plot dragged like a snail. First season was slow, but it didn't drag, because they spent a lot of time developing the characters and relationships between them. I thought the character drama was handled splendidly and very realistically, it was the main reason why Fafner quickly became one of my all time favorite anime. That's the big difference between S1 and S2. S1 wasn't afraid to take a break from the fighting to develop the characters. S2 was all about action. Constant traveling, fighting and suffering, none of which was particularly engaging and rewarding. Essentially, S1 was all about characters and personal drama, S2 was all about action.

Characterization also seemed off in S2. Kazuki and Soushi went full gay because showrunners wanted them fujoshibucks. The rest of the cast became hyper caricutures of themselves.

Too many characters were being killed off and new ones introduced. I thought the deaths were much more meaningful and impactful in the first season. Besides, watching people die all the time gets tiring and loses its effect when it is repeated ad nauseum. I couldn't even remember much of the cast in the second cour besides the main characters from S1.

They were milking the SUFFERING too much. The first season was dramatic, rightfully so, it's a story about survivors of a post-apocalytpic world living on a small island in constant fear of death and with uncertainty of their future. They approached that setting with care and seriousness it deserved. Second season dropped all subtlety and made SUFFERING the highlight of the series (along with fujobaiting). It became too overdramatic.

I think S1 handled everything better. The only thing that improved with s2 was the animation. I don't have much hope for s3 because of how much s2 messed up the story and because I feel they're going to keep milking that fujoshi cow, which is only going to further cheapen the story.

Season one had a very slow start and was thoroughly unengaging until the writer switch and where everything essentially comes into place. Fafner Exodus starts off strong out the gate and never stops, I agree that the an issue with Exodus is that the new cast isn't as engaging as the returning ones and outside Sui's drama with his piece of shit parents none of the 3rd Gens really develop as characters also the Army characters are pretty expendable all things considered.

I disagree. The characterization is still strong for the returning cast. One aspect I love about this series is seeing how the characters grow (seeing the main pilots of S1 get initiated into Alvis, seeing Sakura and Kenji tie the knot and seeing Maya "finally getting what she wanted" were great ). Soushi and Kazuki didn't really have much to grow after S1 and the movie just that Kazuki finally accepted that they're in this fight against the festum forever with Soushi accepting Nict (nothingness) and generally being more sociable while retaining his awkwardness.

Shoko's death was terrible.Wouldn't say the deaths were more impact just that they weren't really expected. Mamoru's death hit me hard though especially the repercussions it had on the cast. I'll say they had more impact in Exodus because they did more with the characters well the ones that weren't Argos or the Army outside Walter-san.

You pose some valid arguments, but personally I didn't experience any of your points as being faults or that they made me dislike the show. I didn't find the pacing to be off since it took it's time to world build and develop characters.

To me the new characters were developed enough as they were. They were only there to fill in the gaps and even though that was their role they did have more back story and development then most other shows I know.

The new gimmicks did not feel out of place to me and felt like new obstacles for the characters to overcome. I actually liked that they stepped away from the "everything is certain doom" stuff of S1 and instead had them grow past those problems to find new ones.

I'll agree with you that the second and third gen pilots could've been treated better, but I'd say we still had a lot of good development with some of them in this series
