Saying 'that's a shounen plot line' is beside the point, as nobody expects the premise of shounen to generally be original. What they do expect is for it's execution to be, or at least enough so to not appear as a clone of it's contemporaries.

This fails to do that, and nobody is really arguing against that point. What about this is even vaguely unique and not uninspired mimicry of a different, currently running, series?

Original execution makes no sense in this context because they follow the same beat and try to elicit the same reaction. The shounen manga that are mentioned in this thread go for the same thing.

All shounen manga are uninspired at this point and people only keep reading them for the characters and maybe the fight scenes.
They're literally coming of age stories for boys and manchildren about overcoming external obstacles using their destined powers. Nothing about that is clever or unique.

The biggest crime for a modern shounen is to have lame characters, I haven't read Amalgam and don't care but that's probably where the focus should be.
