The other issue is that Yuya's character regresses every time he's faced with some kind of big stressor. His character development almost gets completely negated at the cost of making him a weaker character probably so he can't fight off Zarc trying to overtake him. If he developed properly he would probably be strong enough to overcome his influence easily.

Ono's thing is that he's really fucking good when he wants to be. He's like a kid with talent but no discipline. And just like a kid with no discipline, he expects to be able to coast after showing off a bit at the start of the job. Basically, he should never direct a show fully on his own. Arc-V was breaking standard cheap-anime tropes that had been putting shounen in a rut for years back in Stardard. They explicitly showed that Standard had a massive power gap compared to Fusion and Xyz by requiring six main characters just to beat three Obelisk Force. It was supposed to be impressive that Yuya managed to beat three Obelisk Force by himself, but the kicker was that he had to take a normal Extra Deck method and boost it with Pendulum Summoning to do it. The side characters had personality and weight to them, making the audience actually feel emotions when Micchio and Teppei got OTK'd in the most brutal fashion. The Dark Spirit inside of Yuya gave it an aura of mystery, but that mystery and plot were abandoned for a third of the show's run. Characters using known archetypes were actually using their decks correctly (Topaz-Crystal OTK, Pleiades spam, Synchro spam) instead of requiring hokey, situational, "twelve lines of text" that were given in later episodes. Action Duels were a fun mechanic with great visuals, with Action Cards meant to write out those same cheap cards. Girls could actually play the card game and win, and Yuzu even had a character arc for almost half of the first season, where the audience was more engaged by her episodes than by Yuya's.

Personally speaking, I was getting tired of being teased around Shun versus Sora, which was cathartic because it was when things started moving. But then Yugo showed up and they went right back to jerking us around. Then things in the tournament went to shit because of Serena, and we got Odd-Eyes Rebellion Dragon, Sora versus Yuya 2 and Reiji versus Yuya 2 out of that and I was fine for a little while. But then Synchro brought back everything that left me feeling aggravated with Standard.

I really did not like the way Arc-V teased its audience. The pay off was less and less satisfying every time.

That's because GX had more duels than any other show in the franchise. A good chunk of those duels were just filler ones too that had no effect on the plot so the writers could do whatever they wanted. All the GX heavily plot related duels follow the similar formula as DM. Almost every duel in DM was important to the plot, the canon ones anyways, so they had to build the credibility of the villains. Also, it was never just the good guy being at a disadvantage, the advantage definitely switched quite often. A lot of the Battle City duels had great back and forth.

Because it was never about some deeply personal conflict between the two Yus. Unlike Shark and IV, they didn't even have the shared backstory needed for something like that. Let's admit, ZEXAL is far better than 5Ds because its production wasn't troubled, so the story was felt better foreshadowed. For instance, Shark turning on everyone was foreshadowed way back in the middle of ZEXAL I.

Vector's redemption was foreshadowed waaaay back at Tokunosuke's intro episode too. It's also foreshadowed in the WONDER WINGS opening.
