It's actually pretty sad, if you follow the author on Twitter or other media where he talks about it. Basically, he was incredibly hopeful and excited about Sidonia as a world and the character and everything, and had all kinds of hazy plans for where to take it. But his daughter made a comment to him like, 'Why can't you just make something exciting like Shinjeki' or something along those lines. He made jokes about it at the time, and kept working, but it really stuck in his mind and drained away his enthusiasm more and more. A single harsh joke from his daughter pretty much killed Sidonia for him.

I just ended reading blame!

I loved the structures and ambient, The stupidly huge buildings adds to the loneliness and oppressiveness setting.

I disliked some of the drawings and action scenes as they feel somewhat uncompehensible because of the artstyle. The predominant black backgrounds doesnt help when your characters dress in bondage black attires.

Overall I liked it, but knights of sidonia felt like a evolution in his artstyle, character development and storytelling. I would like to see something as oppressive and dark as Blame, executed with his new abilities.

I actually really dig his all white stuff. It's very different from the heavy black stuff, which always felt dirty and had a very sharp industrial feel. The white stories in general have more rounded architecture and feel defanged I guess. I'm less of a fan of his newer character designs. His old characters looked like deformed mutant freaks with inconsistent proportions, the new ones are just very generic. They "improved" but they no longer mesh as well with the scenery and the tone of his stories.

he reuses heavily his own work
Graviton emmiters, Toha heavy Industries and megastructure are common concepts between Blame! and sidonia

That made me think if there is even a common universe in the making or if Nihei is getting sloppy / unoriginal

At that same place, It was explained that other kind of structures would be orders of magnitude easier to make and to manage, like orbitting panels.

A dyson sphere is a cool concept but infeasible with actual and hundreds of years ahead tech, but then again, a "dyson panel" will be in humanity's reach, given that we dont fuck up ourselves before that
