Reposting my own post, cause the last thread is almost dead.

So, I really am second guessing my interpretations of Victor now. I get so many mix messages from him this episode.

From the things he says to Yuuri, or the lack of; the hidden expressions he makes when both Yuri's break his records... how are we supposed to read his reactions? I would have assumed before this week he was fine with it and didn't care about records really anyway. He was ready to move on. Then the things he said while watching the others last week, enjoy being a spectator.

But with a possible return one way or another, were the things about him being lonely, being held back by skating, resolved because of Yuuri? Because his talk with Fairy and Yakov seemed like he was really forcing himself with returning to the ice. So is he only doing everything for Yuuri's sake? Doesn't he just want to eat katsudon and be married to the pig?

I guess we're supposed to be left in the dark and hope S2 answers all the questions about Victor?

I saw the episode again and it's not that bad on a rewatch. There are a lot of interesting plot points they could decide to tackle in season 2 that could lead to more character development.

>Fairy losing his flexibility, dealing with puberty, facing the pressure of being a champion so early on
>Victor returning to competitive skating even though he's probably not fit for it anymore, not being as good as he used to be and how he, who has only been perfect until now would deal with that, possibly injuring himself
>Yuuri finally getting a proper resolution to his anxiety issues, not having to constantly lean on Victor to be able to skate at his best

And of course more cute Baldfat moments and their relationship being actually discussed and having a resolution, I don't even care if they don't kiss or show any PDA, they just need to clearly say they love each other. Surely that's not too much even for a nip anime?

Of course I'd rather we have had a satisfying S1 ending, but S2 could potentially be very good.
Still, it isn't even confirmed we'll get one so for now I'm going to rely on fanfiction.

Yeah. I was fully expecting to get an ambiguous no homo ending, but I didn't think the episode could disappoint me in all the other ways too. When the first scene was cut with "and then instead of talking we decided to resolve nothing" I got worried, and every twist after that just made it worse. I don't dislike Yurio but him winning feels meh when all the older skaters seemed to have higher stakes. He has time, he can try again next year. But then again it seems in YOI universe anyone can skate up to their 90s if they just believe in the magic of love enough, so whatever.

At the same time, Yuuri needs to grow out of needing to have childhood idol as a coach and it's left ambiguous whether he has done that after winning silver.

I think it's fine and perfectly reasonable that Victor had a sort of a bittersweet moment at having his records surpassed.

Am I the only one who noticed Victor's face had "all according to keikaku" written all over it when he addressed Yakov and hugged Fairy? Note that he also said that in order for him to be both Yuuri's coach and continue to skate Yuuri would have to be a 5 time world champion, which is all but impossible to happen. His statements haven't been honest.

The writers are going to have to decide which character they want to fully develop or find some creative compromise.

I love Otabek and I loved his routine but I felt the same. The whole thing was contrived as fuck, even lame compared to how surprisingly eloquent he tends to be.

I know once the negativity has settled a bit and I've processed things I'll be a little more willing to view it as the self-peptalk he needed to stay mentally grounded, but right now I'm just bummed beyond belief.

Victor has always been my favourite and best boy but I'm finding it really hard to love him after this episode. It's not that he did anything wrong, but it's like I've lost all grasp of his characterization. I had so much sympathy for him missing out on life because of skating and I loved how enthusiastic he was about normal daily life, going back to competitive skating contradicts all that.

He just seemed a lot more pure when he was happy about spending time with his dog rather than wanting to compete against his boyfriend and his mini me, and all at an age where he's got little chance of going out on top again.

Why does anime rely so heavily on internal monologues as a narrative device? It's so fucking heavy handed.

I didn't have high expectations but were all the shots of them almost kissing then pulling away really necessary? The scoring in this was so inconsistent. Yuuri didn't actually break the world record after all, Victor's FS score is still higher.

YoI is spectacular for pushing boundaries as much as it did in a society that prefers to pretend that gays and lesbians don't actually exist. What we got was extraordinary when you look at it that way. The show is a product of it's times, which is where some of the disappointment about no kissu comes in. I think it's similar to the no interracial relationships and no obvious sex scenes rules that dominated movies for years. Society eventually relaxed. I think they will about homosexuals in media, too. Eventually.

Celestino practically begs him to return to Detroit. Pichit gets excited at the idea and asks him too. Yakov gruffly remarks that he wouldn't mind refining Yuuri into real gold metal material if it means Vitya comes back under his wing too. Yurio mentions that Yakov obviously has an eye for talent, what with Victor and himself being under his training for years. Yuuri also misses home a bit and would like to stay in Japan since he was away for so long already, and Minami says he could get him in touch with his coach.

Now that I have finished raging I feel better about Yuuri and Viktor display of retardation today.

They still can't communicate for shit. Viktor is probably too afraid of talking his feelings or the lack of deep bonds in his life have crippled him, and Yuuri's anxiety still makes him act retarded.

But by making Yuuri move with Viktor in Russia and live together alone they can work out these issues in a better enviroment. They spent eight months in Yuuri's onsen, but they had little privacy and shared the common areas with Yuuri's family, friends and guests. They had separate rooms, and they basically didn't have many responsabilities besides themselves because Hiroko, Mari and Toshiya did all the cleaning, cooking, etc.

Really looking forward their interactions and evolution in S2.

I didn't really expect a lot of cheesy PDA after episode 8 because their "horny teenager" mood already worn off. A lot of couples in Japanese media never kiss or say I love you because Japanese are suckers for subtlety. A lot of manga/anime/games I have played used "thank you" as replacements for "I love you" for example.

And what we got wasn't really subtle at all, to be honest. The part where Viktor puts his leg between Yuuri's crotch and asks him in a low voice how to arouse him and what he's thinking of, Yuuri pupils dilating and basically surrending to him was very sexually charged. The pair skate was very romantic and intimate, there really was no need for all the cheek caressing and lip brushing, and lewd and tender looks.
