Is this show any good?

I always wanted to try it but almost 200 episodes of episodic harem comedy doesn't sound too good...

Its worth watching just for Ataru. Since he does what everyone wants a modern harem MC to do. A truly letcherous MC who tries to rip of every girls pants and actively looks for sex. While also having one of the best seiyuu in anime.

So much this. Lum might be the face of the series, but Ataru is the star of the show. Almost everything in the series is started by him, and he's the heel of some of the best jokes and gags.

He's such a retard but I love him
>>

But I'm dead serious. Urusei Yatsura is absolutely better than every single Kyoani anime ever made. Especially the films.

I agree with you in a way. Endless Eight felt like someone at KyoAni saw Urusei Yatsura Movie 2 and decided to stretch it out over 8 episodes, with all the good parts removed. But Disappearance of Haruhi really redeemed that shitty move and you could argue it better than most UY movies.
>>
>>151070016

The whole show has one of the best OSTs around.
They really nailed it with the UY anime.

I rewatched it as an adult and it blew my mind.
>>
Why was Ten the fucking worst
I hate him so much. He ruined pretty much any scene he was in
>>
>>151075996

I was shitposting on purpose. Beautiful Dreamer is one of the few examples where the 'its just a dream' plot is actually done correctly. And still my favorite anime movie. Which is why I probably also liked Disappearance of Haruhi. And absolutely hated how Endless Eight was a watered down version of Beautiful Dreamer with no payoff.
>>
>>151076274
I started liking Ten once I realized he's just a baby Ataru. In fact, nearly all the men are pretty much just Ataru. Ataru is only special because he's honest about it.

>>151068590
Ataru is awesome in that he's the hugest asshole on the planet, but I've got to give it to Mendo. Consistently the funniest character in the show. They shit on him so hard, I almost end up feeling sorry for him.

I love his banter with Ataru, and how he's actually pretty pervert behind the good boy facade.
Love his seiyuu, too.

>>151076459

As a kid I had no exposure to Urusei Yatsura other than a few pics, and knowing it was from the same author from Ranma. So I wasn't familiar with the characters, and also at the time my english was still pretty basic, I couldn't follow the movie much, and only had eng subs on the DVD.
I remember being bored during the first half, not really getting any of the humor and banter, and only started understand it was a dream at the end. I remember thinking the part where they fly off with the jet and see their town over a giant turtle was pretty trippy, though. But I still was unsure about what the fuck was going on.
When I rewatched it some years ago, and it also became one of my absolute favorite anime movies, I could appreciate it 100%, and it made me want to watch the TV series.

>>
>>151075926

>inaccurately
The description was about the tone of the movie. No matter how you spin it, what is depicted and examined in Disappearance is through the guise of teenage angst. It's the reason why Disappearance doesn't hold up once you grow out of your teenage years. Beautiful Dreamer on the other hand avoids that by not devolving into melodrama and grounding the scenario through levity.
>>
>>151070725
Nope, SY is really good for its time, and probably can stand up against most of 2016's titles. But K-ON is still a level above.
>>
I still sorta like the third movie a bit more than Beautiful Dreamer in some ways.
>>
But Kyoani made Nichijou?
>>
>>151079256
I would never say Nichijou is better or as good than Urusei Yatsura but it sure does come close.
>>
>>151078139

>It's the reason why Disappearance doesn't hold up once you grow out of your teenage years.
I watched it the first time when I was 28 years old. And by your logic, I can't like Ferris Buellers Day Off because I am no longer an 80s teen.

Your pop psychology assessment is pretty stupid.
>>
Long show is Loooooooooooong
>>
>>151079613
Day Off isn't angst though. It's a comedic through exaggeration examination of freedom and responsibility. This has an appeal for all ages. Kids and teenagers would love to be like the MCs, living carefree and getting away with it. Adults can also cherish such a fantasy, though rationally, they understand that it's not responsible, which is where the comedic tone makes it still watchable for them and not frustrating.

On the other hand, the teenage angst in Disappearance is something nobody likes but teenagers. Children don't get it and find it boring and adults look back on it cringingly. It's something you're supposed to grow out off.
>>
>>151080409
Angst can be done well, enough so that it'll still be good even when you're older.

Examples would be Neon Genesis Evangelion and Donnie Darko (theatrical cut)
>>
>>151080409

Beuller is a typical teen doing petty things against his family for what he considers too much control. Which of course he lives in a high end neighborhood and has an idealistic life. He's a parody of the 'me' generation of that time. While his friend on the other hand lives in a psychological nut house and has legitimate reason to hate his life. The fact that both these characters come together in a comedic way doesn't take away their 'angst'.

Disappearance of Haruhi on the other hand has no angst. The only character who can be considered even close to 'angsty' is Haruhi. The very character who is missing for 90% of the film. The majority of the movie focuses on Kyon trying to solve a mystery that eventually leads to the emotionless girl who shows she does have emotions.

Are you sure you even know what angst is?

Probably because the question is whether any anime by kyoani is better and K-On!! is better than Lucky Star though Lucky Star is better than K-On!
>>
>>151081791

But that is not the context you were using it. You were clearly trying to say it was 'teenage angst'. Which even you have to admit has entirely different connotations. If you just go by the definition you posted, than 90% of all movies have 'angst' in them. Its called 'conflict'.
>>
>>151082612
>If you just go by the definition you posted, than 90% of all movies have 'angst' in them. Its called 'conflict'.
You didn't read the fucking second half of that definition.
>typically an unfocused one about the human condition or the state of the world in general.
Yes, most movies feature anxiety and dread of some form, but not this one.
>>
>>151083546

>an unfocused [view] about the human condition or the state of the world in general.
That still encompasses a huge collection of movies dude. Practically any scifi or horror movie to start with.

Your definition is too loose and once again, doesn't even correlate to your original use of 'teenage' angst.

>That still encompasses a huge collection of movies dude. Practically any scifi or horror movie to start with.
...no. Not even close. The tension in horror movies is derived from fear of the unknown, and while the occasional sci-fi movie does delve into genuine angst, most derive their dread/anxiety from a villain and NOT angst. The Left Hand of Darkness is a book that sure does like it's angst, but something like Star Wars does not contain a lot of angst. Drama, yes, tension, yes - these are not angst.

Something tells you just flat up don't understand what angst is and/or are just being deliberately contrarian.

>Your definition is too loose
It's Oxford English and it makes perfect sense when you lrn 2 reading comprehension. Seriously, your entire argument is trying to work with only a partial definition, while the second line clearly delineates angst from other forms of anxiety/dread. It's not too loose, you're trying to MAKE it seem loose to back up an incredibly weak argument.

>and once again, doesn't even correlate to your original use of 'teenage' angst.
That wasn't me. I haven't even watched Haruhi outside the first three episodes, I think it was overhyped tripe then and still is. I just object to your manhandling of words. But even so, that screencap certainly reeks of the kind of navel-gazing contemplative anxiety that falls under angst, especially of the teenage variety. To be very specific - unfocused anxiety or dread about the human condition. And yes, I know what's coming - but Anon, Nagato's not human! Angst doesn't have to come from a human source, it needs only reflect on the human condition.

You could over complicate it all if you want... but it's basically
>watch tv episodes from 1-195

Make sure you watch the 5th movie as the last thing because it's the finale.

You can watch movie 6 and OVA 12 after though. The reason why I say is OVA 12 was made in 2008 and has a newer artstyle and everything so it would be weird to watch before anything else in the series, and movie 6 is obviously after movie 5 it also isn't very good anyway.
