Easily in the upper echelon of TV anime. Great show. In terms of Yuasa I think Tatami Galaxy is my favourite, but I'd never fault someone for calling this his best. It's certainly his most impressive.

Highly overrated but not terrible. The plot is mostly just tried and true shounen sports plot devices and character archetypes taped together. The main duo and the main antagonist's struggles were especially uninteresting, which made the climax kind of boring, but there were some decent characters like China and Sakuma.

The OST was great tho, made it easy to turn off the brain and get swept up in "feels" if that's your thing.

That's why I said it was overrated but not bad. Some praise the show too highly for whats essentially just a regular shounen anime. From what I've seen, its mainly the type of people that don't watch anime in the first place that overrate it, so it may just be its their first time being exposed to these cliches. The show is worth watching for people interested in the genre, though.

I've watched tons of anime and I prefer Ping Pong to Yuasa's other works, even Tatami Galaxy (although Tatami Galaxy is also quite good, particularly the last few episodes).
Personally I think a lot of Ping Pong's adoration has to do with how well executed it is. You can make use of cliches all you want, how you put them to good use is what matters. Ping Pong also benefits from the fact that it's a fantastic manga adaptation, so much of the credit to its storytelling can be attributed to the mangaka, while Yuasa's style helps make it stand out compared to other sports anime at a first glance.
