I don't think Yuri's from a narrative or character growth side is the actual gold medal. His relationship and love for Victor and the subsequent need to overcome his anxiety is the real cornerstone here.

If anything, Victor's promise of marrying after placing first is just another distraction. Because that makes Yuuri's motivation purely out of worry of losing Victor. As long as he stakes a perfect or almost perfect FS, I think he'll be happy. It's all about the feelings being told, so he just needs to know Victor is there for him regardless.

It's really such a pity that this wasn't two cour. Kubo said that the hardest part was writing a manga to fit anime pacing and that she ended up writing way more than she could use, so she cut it down a lot. There's so much content we didn't get to see.
