In the show, Subaru starts to lose his sanity because he keeps watching people he cares about die.
He also keeps having to throw himself into mortal pain to reset, which isn't good for him either.

Granted, this topic is handled extremely poorly in Re:Zero.
His sanity levels change drastically on a whim. One second he'll be happy, then he gets killed, then next thing you know he's fucking catatonic for two episodes.
The show gives absolutely no idea as to why Subaru should give a single shit about anyone other than himself or Rem.

The last bit is especially important, because Steins;Gate did this exact concept better, because we got to see the relationship between Mayuri and Okabe, and we understood why it was so painful for him.
Plus Okabe does at least "dozens" of time leaps, then starts to become numb to the death.
Subaru completely falls apart after a few.

What happens is that they don't measure up to his idea of a true hero and that gives him the resolve to stomp them.
