Well, the game would need sponsors and license buyers. Would there be any? The owner of RO (and the korean RO company Gravity) is now the japanese game company that originally licensed RO for Japan. A lot of RO's downfall occurred because of a corrupt set of Board of Directors in the korean Gravity company. They were convicted in court of trying to wreck the company (and they did a good job). Why would management wreck a company? That was to trigger the various escape clauses and termination bonuses they would receive if the company dissolved. When the rewards for failure are greater than for success, then management might try to wreck the company especially when they are the ones to vote in such types of provisions.

Corruption in companies or government is bad.

During all that, the 3D version of RO suffered as it would go, get cancelled by the board, go again, and get cancelled. Three times. What a waste of money. In the end, the much weakened company shrunk to the point where it was bought up by the franchisee Gungho Games in Japan.

Gungho is like Anno. Just milk it until the end. So they aren't going to put up any money to make a second season of RO especially when isekai SAO and other virtual reality isekai game anime are out there.

Any anime or further development of RO is really up to Gungho as it is the boss of Gravity.

Since the game is pretty easy now due to the "easy mode" features added in to compete against other games, you can level up scratch chars solo to be transcendant in one day. After all, you already know how to play the game and you importantly know and understand the maps and when to move on.

Some players make it a challenge to set time records. Long ago, the GMs used to get involved inside the game. One time, they ran a contest to see how high a level you can get a scratch char in 10 minutes of play. Due to GM confusion, they actually allowed 12 minutes. It was guaranteed an equal start because everyone had to show up with a newly created novice at the castle training ground and sign up for the contest there. The winner reached level 76 in 12 minutes. There were multiple chars in the 50's and 40's. Some chars were in the 30's. A lot of chars were in the 20's which showed lots of players understood the fine point quirks of the game. And of course, a ton of players were still novices as they had not even gotten job10 in that 12 minutes to quit being a newbie novice. I sucked since mine was just level 15 in 12 minutes.

In the current iRO game, as far as I know, the record time to quit being a novice is approx 7 minutes. It's a lot more walking around than in the older game version where someone reached 76 in 12 minutes.

The game being free to play was a big deal too. A player can be any class and get to level max without ever paying to play. There's no gimping and the war of emperium is available to all without paying. The company made good on its statement that the game was free to play. It's unlike almost every other company where time limits were imposed, level limits, travel restrictions, gear restrictions, etc. RO didn't really limit the players who didn't pay unless you are thinking of certain character customizations.

Each country or region had its own franchisee that licensed the game from Gravity / Gungho.

Ragnarok Online has over 1000 maps you can fight on. But I bet most people never get to most of the maps because they never do quests or other things to unlock access. Some maps are also only available while a quest is in progress. So if you solve the quest or move on from that point, you might lose access to the map. Occasionally, some people refused to finish quests just to keep access to that map such as the one with the unique drops Eye of Hellion. Those drops are only from that map and it can only be accessed at a certain point in a quest. If you solve the quest, you can never go back unless you are married or your baby cries out for mama and papa to come save it.

Various quests come on that award OCA (card albums) which drop a random card. The constantly recurring god item quest is actually easy to do and has an OCA drop at the end of the 3rd leg. You can re-do it every year if Santa likes you, but of course it is also do-able on your alternate chars too.

WoE castles have OCA and guild masters hand those out. The top end boss-type monsters also drop OCA if they are killed which also makes Endless Tower runs good. But ET is not the only frequent source of OCA monsters since the New World has OCA dropping monsters. A lot of info from the New World aren't in the database or the wiki. What you see in the database and wiki are mostly old world items. Keeping quiet is part of the competitive advantage of gaming as well as the attitude of "let them earn their knowledge instead of being spoon fed". So there's a bit more mystery on sources of things and what to do in the New World.

Well, those anime shows weren't really about the MMO or game. They only used the game as an excuse to give the MC an isekai route.

For example, SAO didn't really have much about the game world and its game play after the first episode. Only when such plot items got in the way of awarding new super powers or assets to the characters did the game mechanics appear. That makes the anime not about the game. Those anime constantly forced competing players to be inferior at leveling, skill usage, or wealth acquisition in order to have the MC and friends look good relative to others playing the game.

Can you imagine any online game such as RO or Warcraft to deliberately give everyone else in the game a false quest once someone named Kirito started playing that same quest? What also sucks is that Kirito's always successful party had the daughter of the game owner. Is the reason why that party was so successful in getting unique named god gears? And why were all other players blocked from the quest once she and kirito's party started the quest? Isn't that a conflict of interest? I say so! RO legitimately made me make friends for life. The experiences I had there and people I met and interests it sparked in me like writing and reading stories/fanfics honestly helped shape who I am today. Hell, I sitll keep in contact with friends I made through that game.

The scenario was so good. The memories are even better. I can't stand the grindfest, but I walked around all maps I could and did every quest I could. The NPCs, the lore, all the stories in that game. All wrapped up together with the magic of being twelve.

All these moments, lost forever...like tears in the rain. Even if I tried, they wouldn't come back. It left too much of a lasting impression. The anime came in at just the right time, too. Ragnarok Online was legitimately one of my biggest childhood influences.

Some private servers reset when the donations for custom gear get low. The site comes back under a new name and seeks "donations" once again in order to get the customized gear.

I had the same experience. I made lifelong friends through this game, one guy I've hung out with irl a few times. Also had the most intense rivalries ever with other players on different servers. Sometimes to the point where me and another person just simply didn't like each other and the pvp room was the common ground where you'd prove who the better man was.

I've searched other mmorpgs for the kinds of experiences this game gave me and not ever have I found anything close at all to my time in RO.

The Lithuanian mythology was easily one of the best parts of the game.
The story was kinda cool, even if the translation was trash, shit like the merchant girl who ends getting demon AIDS or the guy who made a machine to sacrifice his entire town so he could become a demon, or the owl forests in general.
The word was even more fucked that Ragnarok's, at least RO was just on decline instead of straight-up post apocalyptic.

They made classes with shitty skillsets and gimmicks that are practically useless.

Short example, you only take elementalist for frost cloud, just like how you take wizard for storm gust but a lot worse in TOS's case.

For example, potion brewing is fixed for everybody. When someone makes lvl 10 HP potions, it doesn't differentiate itself from other player made pots. Unlike how RO did it with the Ranking system. Same goes for their other skills, which results to price undercutting. It only takes one guy to undercut the whole server and drop their profits to the floor.

This leads to limited class choices if you want your character to be relevant. And I believe they still can't repick their class choices, so it's a huge field of noob pitfalls.

And it's not just that but skills deal mostly fixed damage. If you start as a wizard and fall in love with magic missile, it's only going to deal like 300 damage, about as much as your rank 4 skills. Now rank 8 spellcasters are getting spells with 2k-8k base damage. It's the stupidest thing because even though you're free to move up and down through the ranks it's almost pointless moving down or sideways because you're dealing such pathetic damage compared to going straight up.
Another really stupid thing back when I played, they might have changed it, was the multi-hit spells were so much better than flat damage spells it was insane. Every single tick of a multi-hit spell applied all your damage buffs and extra stats so you'd outdamage big single hits by a mile.

Back when I played I wanted to become a hunter. I knew it was a terrible class with super situational skills that didn't work 90% of the time and each skill you cast was a 50/50 chance for your pet's AI to break until you re-log into the game. What I didn't know was that the quest to change into a hunter has you collect drops from stupidly rare monsters. Only 3 exist on the whole map, they have a 5 minute respawn timer, they're important for several quests in that area, and they drop one of the components for the strongest accessory in the game. Their spawn points were absolutely flooded with other players and bots who changed the files so their melee attacks were as wide as the screen. It took me 4 hours to finally become a hunter.

Tree of Savior is awful from it's very core. From the way stats work, the impossible to balance classes, linear progression, WoW influences in terms of game design and the horribly optimized game engine it's just a mishmash of the worst aspects of current MMO's with RO's cutesy aesthetics.

And I still logged 400 hours in it. Before losing all hope that the devs would be able to salvage it but then they tried to release it with paid early access

I played Ragnarok Online and Lineage 2 back in the day when both were new. I also remember when in Ragnarok Online people could just steal your loot, by clicking on it faster.

I and my reallife friends started playing Lineage 2 one day, it was Korean and/or Japanese Beta, where you had to get fake personal IDs numbers so it looks like you are from Korea or Japan.

The Guilds and Aliances Drama was really fun, I think the Server was 'Kain'. It also had an epic scale feel to it. I think there were two really big guilds in the end. What caught my attention and I thought is funny, is that when ever the one guild released clan videos of castle sieges or something, they used hip hop music. The other big guild's videos had always rock, metal or something. So I imagined the oposit big guild/alliance in which I was not, are a bunch of hip hopers. Maybe this is why they didn't like each other that much, I thought.

What I found exiting in Ragnarok Online was the concept that you play as your own gender. I always played a Thief in RO. I remember naming him "shadoow" one time in open beta I think. Because "shadow" was already taken.

Ragnarok Online and Lineage 2 had the biggest MMO influence on me. Then World of Warcraft came along, and i never could get really into it, even when trying multiple times, because my older brother played it, his friends, and my other friends sometimes. I think WoW is ugly. Ragnarok Online and Lineage 2 are by far more pleasing to the eye.
