There is different. Violet shows character - looking at designs and her background, one expects her to be silent obidient robot waifu. She isnt.

She is technically a child mind in adult body that doesnt age, being able to be both spoiled, speak her mind, act foolishly and impulsively - while retaining the image of grace and maturity too. She`s less a "robot", more naive child - though also able to act stonecold, murder people and have confusion about displayer human emotions: since she still rediscovers her own.

In short - she`s pretty interesting character, and breaks the mold of stereotypes. The nearest i`d compare would be Watashi from the Humanity Has Declined - except Violet lacks the snarky part: she is genuine.

Yeah, for some reason modern anime looks a lot less impressive than i thought it would look like at this point. Is it the low contrast? Everything just seems so bright and clinically clean that it´s kinda ruining any sort of atmosphere.

Blame EVA. Before the boom in late night anime caused by Evangelion, we usually got 20-50 anime per year, now it's somewhere around 250-300+

Things like Robot Carnival, Macross DYRL, and Gundam 0083 are outliers in terms of design detail not to mention they aren't TV anime. The biggest offenders in modern anime designs tend to be the hair, eye, and costume detail. It's unnecessarily complicated and only hinders animators from pursuing motion in the already restrictive schedules of TV anime.

The reason new characters are more complicated is because everything has been done before and writers are trying to create (semi-)original designs. I wish they´d rather actually write a stroy though than just 20 girls per show.

Many shows have been able to cope with that high level of detail, but at the cost of more expressive movement. I miss Horiguchi's simpler designs back when she was active at the studio, they're so much more animation-friendly. That's why K-ON has move lively animation than Hibike since animators don't have to spend so much time fussing over hundreds of lines and can actually focus on animating things.
