He had told Reiji and Yuya to go on without him. He had decided to stay behind, to play the hero. But don't heroes win? Don't heroes get to bask in the glory of being a winner? No... Not always. And that's why Sawatari stood up. That's why Sawatari was smiling as Yuri activated the Sealing Technology in his duel disk, because Sawatari finally understood, now that he was going to be a card, that this was the moment he had always been waiting for. I know its a bit late but I'd say that if you can invest some time, go for Zexal.
The story may start off a bit slow and the characters may be a bit unsettling at first glance, but it will definitely get better.
One of Zexal's best features is character development, so if possible try not to skip out on episodes featuring the main characters.

If you already know the mechanics behind all summoning methods like Fusion, Synchro and Xyz, I'd say go for Arc-V.
Arc-V definitely has one of the better first year start-up in the series, and I guess the the rest is controversial.

Starve Venom is great in the anime and Yuri is treated as a threat. Edo has shit cards and both of his boss monsters are some of the worst ever. They don't do anything. Even going back to DM boss monsters at least did something. Great Moth drained attack. Red-Eyes destroyed both of Jounouchi's monsters with one attack. Relinquished was amazing. You get to Dystopia Guy and it has a little burn effect and nothing else. The other effects rely on your opponent to mess with its attack which is retarded. It has no protection either. Nah, DM manga and early 5Ds had a coherent story and great writing. The problem is the lack of talent. Yoshida is a hack who only knows how to do one basic plot and he continously rehashes it. Kamishiro hates duels so of course the quality of his writing will suffer in a show that uses duels as an integral part of the story. We need people who understand that dynamic well. Tomioka and Zappa Gou are good examples of the kind of YGO scriptwriters we need.

I doubt anyone who makes a voluntary decision to watch a Yugioh spin-off has high expectations for tightly paced and super coherent stories with no meandering or holes on par with the absolute best shounen out there. Mangas don't shill the cards as much as the anime, so the plot isn't changed for promotion of cards like that. Their story is more cohesive and quick due to that.

GX manga for example had the infamous Dark Law and he wasn't even an effect monster. The story had a focus from start to end and that was that, while the anime was a jumbled up mess.

5D's has the whole god thingy going on, while the anime was extended and traded a bunch of concepts over and over, ending up in what we had. It's also the series where changing plot for shilling was most blatant with Crow who was originally a villain becoming a main protagonist

Zexal isn't that much of shilling like the other two, but in comparison, its clear there were many times what was planned ended up scrapped in order for another thing to happen and this occurred many times, one infamous example is The Closed Eight. The manga however focuses on Kyouji and shit.

Arc-V had the plot thought up from beginning to end, but it had Zexal's flaws of scrapping and redoing a bunch of stuff and 5D's flaws of changing stuff for shilling. Synchro dimension was proof of that, and due to it Xyz and Fusion were butchered. Arc-V also had the biggest flaw of throwing developement out of the window and treating characters like shit after Synchro. Meanwhile, the manga follows the story of time travel and multiverse theory and focuses ona more straighforward path

I don't think they're going that way. If Arc V activates, Yuzu/Rin/Ruri/Serena are dead permanently because Ray would be alive. The same goes for Zarc, where Yuya, Yuto, Yugo and Yuri are all sacrificed to revive their incarnation. Even if every carded person is turned back, that's still a grand total of 8. Since the cards can only be reversed when Arc V activates, its either one or the other.

There's also the fact that, despite lasting the same time in years, they're far shorter than their respective anime. Cutting out filler of DM, all series are about the same length. However, the equivalent manga chapters of the original take up about 31 tankouban. All the other manga take up 9. In other words, even accounting for the dragged-out story of a TV series compared to reading it in print, they're much shorter. This is not a bad thing, although some people felt that the endings for the spin-offs have been a little weak (sometimes blaming the editors for wanting the series to end so the next one to start, i.e. GX > ZEXAL and ZEXAL > ARC-V).
