The concept was just poorly executed. Basing a whole show around "spooky train ride" is an interesting idea but in practice it just meant we were kept in anticipation of them ACTUALLY arriving at the Iron Fortress. It's like if there was an anime called "Adventures in Disney Land" and in the first episode, everyone got into the car and left for Disney Land, and then every episode after that was just part of the car ride.

Probably same reason people hate Aldnoah. It was obviously just made so Sony Music could try to have its own hit like AoT (I'm almost certain they approached Wit first) and to sell some more Sawano and Aimer music by association. Aside from some of the animation staff clearly nobody gave much of a shit about what they were doing resulting in directed scenes like a guy cutting a rope from like a hundred meters away with a knife and a lame cliche plot line to end things. Aniplex sucks ass at franchise building and seems to see everything besides it's music tie ups as entirely disposable. Its just a really shitty self serving way to make anime. As long as they keep approaching their originals this way they'll never be able to have the same class of hits as the stuff they're clearly trying to rip off
