The original series and EoE will always continue to exist. They will always make up "Neon Genesis Evangelion". Anything else would just be building on its legacy and stand as a testament to how powerful and moving it is. That's what Anno wants.

This has been happening since the beginning though, so I don't know why people think it's a big deal that he's saying it now. We've had like bunch of spinoff manga, a bunch of games, and a light novel that all expand on the series' lore or take place in AUs. There will never be a direct "Evangelion Second Season" because Anno is too proud of his creation to let something like that happen.

The second film, following on from what we now know as The End of Evangelion, would be this concept.
