It started off with a neat little Arabian Nights feel, but started to ditch that as the series went on.
Especially after the time skip where it went to an almost modern background.

I still read it, but I think a lot of people dropped it during that huge flashback arc and never bothered picking it up again. That arc was pretty badly received in Japan too.

At least Alibaba finally got a waifu.

I know what you're getting at, but the anon didn't say political intrigue was bad, just that it was bad in Magi, poorly handled, which I agree with. Bad political intrigue just makes the material boring.

I'm not saying Magi is a bad manga, but it's definitely not something I'd recommend to a friend unless they were asking for specific or niche recommendations.
