We find out in this article that Khara loaned Gainax 100 million yen in August 2014, which was presumably part of the Eva rights deal.
So even after all the actual animation talent left Gainax they still had a revenue stream from royalties on properties but also outright selling the properties.

Yet all this time Yamaga couldn't get anything made. He went to Singapore to try and get funding for Aoki Uru and it still didn't materialize.

Is Yamaga blackballed in the industry for some reason?

I've read the thread, and if I'm understanding this correctly, Gainax started off as a ragtag group of animators who initially made good stuff.

Years passed, and all the talent left and started new individual studios. Now Gainax is about to die.

Anno, one of the founders, is suing to get back money he was promised. Although it's possible he may buyout Gainax, there doesn't seem to be anything worth getting besides Gunbuster, PSG and TTGL.

The galling thing about the whole charade is that Gainax had been gracefully dying for a while now. After their last anime series, Houkago no Pleiades, they actually publicly announced that their staff should seek other employment, because they wouldn't be working on anything else anytime soon. They've known about their own decline and have been preparing to pass the torch for some time.

They could have held onto their rights to Eva and sat pretty with royalty money basically until the end of time, but they sold those rights to Anno's new studio for pennies. It wasn't selling so much as charitably giving away one of the largest franchise in anime in the hopes that the new studio could do more with it now that Gainax obviously could not. That's profoundly noble. Now Anno is suing them because apparently giving away Eva's IP for a 1/1000 of its net value wasn't good enough, and he wants MORE MONEY. It's doubly pathetic because Anno has managed to do absolutely nothing with the Eva IP except run it into the fucking ground and has nobody to blame for himself.

Anno himself wasn't originally entitled any payout because directors don't own any part of the IP they work on. They're the only "Studio" I know of and TTGL is still my all time favorite anime, but I only ever knew of 3 of their works and assumed they had been bought out years ago. Or that all the artists that worked on the ones I cared about had left (TTGL).
