It's BECAUSE it is a terrible year. I already typed it out twice elsewhere, but basically sequels are greenlighted because the fund managers are not willing to take on new risky ventures. Sequels are low earners but give steady returns, so you go to them for investment when you are frightened of the future.

The poison wasn't really highlighted much in the Yanagi fight itself. I think Yanagi makes one comment saying it doesn't seem to work. Baki seems fine afterwards. If they cut out Kunimatsu's narration they can completely ignore it.

We are first showed poisoned Baki after all the convicts are dealt with, which would make it the start of a new season rather than the first one.

Baki was absent for the post Yanagi fight tho. He bugged out and then we got the Dorian and Doyle stuff as well as Jack vs Sikorsky. Baki played VERY little into the Prisoner Arc and it was mostly the supporting cast doing shit.

I think I figured out things decently starting from the second series without reading what was of the first series or watching the show. It's not an insurmountable wall to pass, I was a little confused and I figured things out and who everyone was basically. From the second series what I eventually gathered

Katsumi is a karate guy who runs a popular school
Doppo is his daddy who used to run the school but quit
Hanayama is a yakuza guy who was born strong
Shibukawa is a silly sadistic aikido master
Yujiro is Baki's dad and everyone is afraid of him and he does all this ridiculous stuff
Retsu is a Chinese guy who became friends with everyone
Tokugawa is a rich autist who likes watching fights and fighting
Strydum is a military dude who watches Yujiro
Jack is a roid monster who Baki beat and his brother
Kureha is a doctor and his brother Kosho is a fighter too

I had pretty much the same experience, Gaia was the only thing that really felt out of nowhere.

Jack, Strydum, and Motobe made me feel like I was missing massive parts of the plot but their motivations and purpose in the story weren't too hard to grasp.

No, so I summarized it. Read this if you want.

Plot of the first one: Baki has a horrible childhood. His dad is the strongest 'creature' on the face of the Earth. His dad trains him to become a fighter for a few years, then abandons him. Blah blah blah, the purpose of the father having Baki as a child was so that he could have an opponent. Baki gets almost killed in a fight against his father a few years later, and the father kills the mother. Fast-forward 4 years. Baki is a fighter in an underground arena where the strongest men in the world gather to compete for the title of "Strongest in the World". Baki is the current champion, as his father is completely MIA and does not compete (and is generally not considered human). The point of joining the underground arena was so that Baki could gain enough strength to challenge his father again and defeat him. A bunch of fights later, the owner of the arena announces a tournament. He sends out scouts to scour the globe in search of other 'underground' fighters who might be candidates for "Strongest in the World". They return with ~30 new fighters, among whom are the main cast for the rest of the franchise. Tournament happens. Baki wins by the narrowest thread of a thread. He realizes that he still needs to become much stronger in order to challenge his father. Queue series 2; New Grappler Baki.

I'd argue that the bulk of Baki's characterization and development happens in the first and second series, so I would strongly recommend anyone that wants to get into the franchise to read it first, or alternatively to watch the anime, altohough it's not exactly a good adaptation in terms of conveying what makes the manga so much fun.
