Arc-V's problem in general, was ever since XYZ arc and how much the writers rushed it as well as the huge amounts of laziness the duels have been incredibly dull and characters only doing said actions for the sake of the plot and nothing more without having any of emotion whatsoever.

The issue I have with Shark's change is that it was so fucking abrupt that I couldn't take it or him seriously.

The entire sequence was like four eps, but we only got a few scenes to see him looking through his memories during those eps: generally just the very beginning and towards the end where he APPARENTLY built up bonds with his people off-screen. It made it impossible for me to take the change in stride since he spent SO LONG building up relationships with yuma and the entire time before this just shitting on the barians for good reason. The change itself works, but how they handled it felt like a betrayal of his character.

The sad thing about the egao thing is that Yuya pretty much told the Xyz dimension people (Including Shun) and the Fusion dimension invaders that anger is not going to solve anything and that egao is the key to peace or something like that.

The problem is that Yuya gets very easily angered if his friends, family and especially Yuzu is in danger, and as a result he himself is not following his egao ideals.
Keep in mind that the Xyz dimension citizen had their entire home demolished, with their friends and family carded or worse killed.

I know its due to Zarc's influence and all but we are near the end of the anime and it would have been better for Yuya to handle his anger problems with Zarc by now.

Their pretty much villians of their own work. Vector's basically the card game version of the Marvel's Loki. Yuri's more of a card game Joker. Only difference really is that one sucks at the game and ones been strong from the get-go it's the he was basically used as a running gag until the final act.

Regardless, Zexal honestly does have memorable villains and anti-hero in comparison to Arc-V, which isn't a surprise with how much the show fell since after leaving Standard. Both Symphogear and Yugioh had external problems and you people know it, you just want a convenient scapegoat to blame.

Lesbogear for 3 seasons had to fit Kaneko's ideas into 1 cour even though there is enough material for 2, G and GX had awful second halves because outside pressure wanted last minute changes that fucks up the scheduling (Mikugear and Chris bikini henshin). 5Ds had its head writer dropped out halfway into a serious plot, a shitty anniversary movie that took the writer's times and demographic problems (kids didn't like 5Ds, you can't keep the cults after the scandal) that led to pressure from the network. BBT actually had to be rewritten completely at least once. Yoshida was planning for it to be an arc of the 5Ds anime proper, but Konami told him to make it a movie instead. Probably didn't want to pay out for KENN and Yugi's VA for a whole season when they could just pay for the movie and be done with it.

There's two aspects to duels.

One is the story part where the characters interact with each other through dialogue.

The other is the pure mechanics of the duel. How cards are played, how complex the moves are, and how the duelist responds to the opponent.

While ZEXAL's duels did a good job with respect to the first aspect, they weren't really that complex. A lot of the duels were just sitting on one boss monster and battles of whoever had the stronger ATK. They were very simple duels, bar a few exceptions. Arc-V is better in that regard as its duel writing is a bit more sophisticated incorporating multiple summoning methods and introducing various combos with many cards.

I'm willing to bet that anyone that actually likes ZeXal's duels is simply blanking out on the vast majority of shitty ones that plagued ZeXal I and the first half-dozen garbage Duelist of the Week nonsense duels from the first half of ZeXal II.

I'm willing to discount Don Thousand because the final boss ALWAYS has some game-breaking bullshit, but the vast majority of ZeXal's duels were the same shit every duel.
