In Watchmen it made some sense. The goal was to de-escalate tensions between the US and the USSR to avoid Nuclear War. A combination of the alien threat and MAD (which has been pretty effective in real life I must add) was enough to to tone things down.
Conflict and war will still exist regardless of what Ozymandias believes, but Nuclear War at the very least has been averted.

I'm not so sure about that. I think the fall of monarchies was inevitable. The more advanced a society becomes, the less it needs a king with heirs running things. More importantly, other interested parties that would rather hold authority themselves and now have the power and support to do so inevitably emerge.

That's exactly my point. We don't need kings because other people can wield power just as well and will want to sieze that power, having the right bloodline is no longer necessary (although it helps).
The government that replaces the monarchy can be any kind, but my point is that eventually heredietary monarchies become obsolete because they're a relic of our tribal origins.
