I actually wouldn't be that sure that Izetta couldn't defeat Sophie. They did look evenly matched during her fight, even although Sophie ultimately just tried to lure Izetta towards the Germanian front line where they could then capture her with ease.

The main problem is definitely that Sophie has magic-draining powers that makes Izetta an useless little girl.
